Lake Safety Exercise in Riva del Garda: Nautical Rescue in Action

An important security exercise took place in the waters of Alto Garda, involving various forces including the Riva del Garda Fire Brigade, the Coast Guard, the Diving Unit, and air rescue services. During the activity, held aboard the ferry Tonale, critical situations were simulated, such as a fire on board and the recovery of a person in the water. The exercise also included the evacuation of passengers, including two travelers with disabilities, demonstrating the effectiveness of rescue procedures.
The operational teams managed various scenarios, using a “Mayday” call to coordinate operations while divers performed the recovery of an individual beneath the hull of the ship. Additionally, a rescue operator was “hoisted” to assist an injured person. The simulations highlighted the synergy among the different units involved and underscored the importance of teamwork in ensuring safety within the context of marine rescue on the lake.

Housing emergency in Desenzano: Jack's challenge and disability

The situation of Jack in Desenzano exemplifies the housing emergency affecting many families with special needs. Jack, 15 years old and suffering from spastic tetraparesis, requires disability assistance 24 hours a day. He had to leave his barrier-free home when the landlord decided not to renew the lease in order to convert the property into a vacation rental. Despite the family’s legal efforts, they were unable to retain their residence, forcing them to return to Cernusco sul Naviglio.
In this critical context, Jack’s grandparents offered part of their farmhouse to build a new home tailored to his needs. To support this project, the association "Jack gli occhi della speranza" was founded, launching a fundraising campaign on Idea Ginger to make the future home accessible and equipped with suitable facilities for children with special needs. The community is invited to contribute to this initiative to ensure a better future for Jack and other children in similar circumstances.

Pollutant Discharges in Desenzano: Alert on Water Quality

Recent investigations conducted by the Five Star Movement have revealed the presence of polluting discharges along the shores of the lake, with an alarming 80% of the monitored points showing signs of contamination. This study, initiated between 2023 and 2024, examined 25 discharges from Sirmione to Toscolano Maderno, highlighting significant issues within the local sewage networks. Samples taken in December 2024, May, and August 2025 revealed that only 12% of the discharges were free of contamination, while the remainder frequently exhibited the mixing of stormwater with sewage.
Microbiological analyses indicated concerning levels of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci, suggesting a serious risk to water quality. The Movement has emphasized the urgency for structural investments and greater transparency in the management of the sewage system to address these critical issues. In particular, they are calling for the publication of the sewage network mapping and targeted interventions to remediate problematic sections. Activists warn that the current situation can no longer be tolerated and that immediate actions are necessary to protect this precious ecosystem.

Underwater Robot in Desenzano del Garda for Environmental Protection

A submarine robot has recently been employed in Desenzano del Garda to map the waste present on the lakebed, as part of a project by WWF in collaboration with the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Pisa. The robot, named "ZENO," is an autonomous vehicle designed to explore lake depths systematically and safely. Equipped with multispectral sensors, sonar, and high-resolution cameras, ZENO has already begun to identify and geolocate submerged waste, under the supervision of Paolo Zanollo, the WWF representative for the Garda area in Bergamo Brescia.
This initiative goes beyond mere reconnaissance: the data collected serves as a vital scientific resource for assessing water pollution levels and the impact of waste on aquatic ecosystems. The information obtained will contribute to advanced studies and targeted remediation efforts, while also supporting awareness activities regarding proper waste disposal. The preliminary mapping conducted in the lower lake could serve as a replicable model for other Italian and European lakes, thereby promoting environmental protection through technological innovation.
