Sublime cliché, the third edition of the Festival of Foreign Academies and Cultural Institutes in Rome, curated by Saverio Verini at MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome , pays tribute to the connection between the extensive network of foreign cultural institutions and academies in Rome — along with their artist-in-residence programs — and the city itself.

The catalogue, published by DRAGO Publisher, serves as an extension of the exhibition project and the festival’s live program: in addition to the collection of images and texts documenting the works on display and the events of Live Live Live!, the publication includes critical contributions by Edoardo Albinati and Michele Di Monte, offering a historical and original perspective on the eternal and decaying city.

In Sublime cliché the city will be present and perceptible in all the selected works, without failing to come to grips with antiquity and the magnificence of sites, or with apparently more marginal or anonymous contexts. The show sets out to offer an oneiric and unexpected vision in which even clichés can be sublimated.

The neighbourhood where I live is called “Trastevere” which in Latin means “across the Tiber”, the Tiber is the city river, (some people say that in Etruscan language river is Rumen, so the name Rome comes from the Tiber). Thanks to this, I founded a label that I called TRUSTEVER, that sounds the same as my neighbourhood but it’s fresh because in a way this place is fresh...
During the 70’s it was full of smugglers, robbery and scooter bag-snatching, today is ok but there are too many boutiques and shou-shou shops... the main thing is a bar that foreign people call he**in, it’s cheap and all kind of freaks go there...
Anyway I nailed Trustever in 1996, the year where all the troubles started, bu****it people, fake partners, fake fresh, fake everything....the opposite of my concept.
Shaft after shaft I decided to make a structure by myself based on skateboarding,
music and good feelings...

TO MASSIMO “CRASH KID” COLONNA WHO HEADSPINNED ON THE WORLD.
“MASSIMO WAS A COLUMN. RESOLUTE AND SMILING. A POINT OF REFERENCE. THE CALMNESS IN HIS GESTURES, AND THE BOOST IN DANCING INSTILLED GRIT AND JOY. ALWAYS KIND AND HELPFUL, ALWAYS READY TO LEND A SOLID AND FIRM HAND. BE IT TO DANCE OR CLEAR A TABLE FULL OF YOUNG B-BOYS. WITH KID WE LAUGHED, TRAVELED, UNDERSTOOD, WON, AND LOST. I OFTEN THINK ABOUT HIM AND I MISS HIM ALL THE TIME.”

Los Angeles is quite a new city, the second largest in the United States. Following Cartagena and Shanghai, JR wants to bring his Wrinkles of the City project to Los Angeles in 2011. This time, the purpose of the project isn’t to meet witnesses of the changes that have occurred in the city or in their own lives.
Los Angeles is the place where the Hollywood myth was born, with its stars system, the glamour and the beauty being part of the identity of the city. For this project, JR wishes to oppose the wrinkles of old people living in LA and the marks of their past with the image of perfection or regenerated beauty in the XXIst century. For instance, in Southern California, plastic surgery is no longer a luxury but a lifestyle. It is now socially accepted, above all cultural and social barriers.

Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting - Dr. Seuss

The Golden Age Of Neglect by Ed Templeton templeton

There are teenage smokers and drinkers. There are those whose despondence is clearly evident as they confront the camera with vacant eyes. This, quite simply put, is The Golden Age of Neglect - a classic example of Ed Templeton’s work which is deeply anchored in street life and street style, music (rock, punk, and rap), and graphic culture (wall paintings, murals, tags, and graffiti). This is the vision of an artist who crosses the realms of art, sports, s*x, drugs, violence, fashion, and youth. A fixture of the Los Angeles skateboarding scene, Ed Templeton has been producing photographs, documenting a real story of his life, international tours, and encounters in the skateboarding world for over 10 years. Fuelled by incredible raw energy, irreverence, and spontaneity, his work is comprised of an extraordinary number of photographs and canvases, as well as a body of graphic work from drawings, sketch books and collages to montages and correspondence.
