Reference tracks are useful, but not because your band should sound exactly like another band. They help define direction. How bright should the guitars be? How loud should the vocal feel? How tight should the drums sound? How much low end is too much? Should the mix feel raw, polished, aggressive, atmospheric or more old-school? A good reference gives context. The important part is knowing what you like about it. “Make it sound like this album” is too vague. “The guitars have the kind of bite we like, but we want a darker vocal sound” is much more useful. References help the mix serve your music instead of chasing a generic modern sound.
