In 2014, American economists began to use the term "secular stagnation" to describe the slow recovery of the US economy after the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis. 📰

Two prominent economists, Lawrence Summers and Robert Gordon, provided different explanations for the phenomenon. Summers believed that the crisis of demand, brought on by a decrease in interest rates and a lack of investment, was the main cause of secular stagnation. 📊

Gordon, on the other hand, identified a lack of innovation as the primary problem, due to demographic decline, public debt, low education levels, and economic inequality.

According to Gordon, these factors have slowed US economic growth from a consistent 2% annually to a constant rate over time, leaving future generations with lower economic growth than their predecessors. 📈

However, researchers such as Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee argue that investing in technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and medical advancements could reorganize the labor market and counteract the effects of secular stagnation. 📉

The European Central Bank (ECB) modifies short-term interest rates to influence the long-term ones, which affects people's spending decisions, employment rate, prices stability, inflation, and daily decisions. 🏦

ECB controls three key interest rates: the rate on the marginal lending facility, the deposit facility rate, and the interest rate on the main refinancing operations (MRO), which is the most important.

The ECB's goal is to maintain steady economic growth, which is achieved by regulating monetary policy, controlling inflation/deflation, and ensuring economic stability. In times of recession, the ECB decreases key interest rates to allow firms to borrow money at a lower cost, leading to more investments, productivity, and purchases by people. In contrast, in times of economic prosperity, Central Banks can increase interest rates to reduce investments, employment, and prices. 📈

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, ECB increased its purchasing program, and Central Banks worldwide have the mission to regulate monetary policy and achieve set goals through key interest rates. ECB uses forward guidance to infer the goals it wants to reach in the future and exercise its power in monetary policy. 📊📰
