What if one of Switzerland’s most fascinating landscape photographers was actually a provincial police officer, taking photographs purely for work?

From 1948 to 1990, Arnold Odermatt served in the Nidwalden police force. His job was to document traffic accidents as official evidence. Armed with a Rolleiflex and limited by budget constraints to a single shot per crash, Odermatt didn’t just record the damage. He framed the chaos of crushed metal within a haunting, almost majestic stage: dramatic cloudy skies, fog-draped Alpine panoramas, and silent onlookers.

The resulting images are almost surreal, blending cold precision with a strange, dreamlike quality that evokes a deeply unsettling yet hypnotic feeling in the viewer.

Odermatt never considered himself an artist. For 40 years, he simply documented the daily work of the Nidwalden police force. Only rarely were his photographs of interest to the local press, the courts, or insurance companies.

Then, in 2001, everything changed. Harald Szeemann selected Odermatt’s photography for the 49th Venice Biennale. In 2002, James Rondeau presented his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by Urs Stahel’s exhibition at Fotomuseum Winterthur in 2004.

What began as police documentation became something far stranger: a body of work in which accidents, landscapes, and chance collide and where destruction acquires an unexpected beauty.
