🇬🇧 Yes, you saw that right: toe wrestling is basically arm wrestling, except you’re sitting down, barefoot, and trying to pin your opponent’s foot using nothing but your big toe.
It sounds like a joke, but it has rules, referees, world championships and a history that goes back to a pub in Staffordshire in 1974, when a group of friends apparently decided Britain needed a sport it could actually win. The sport has been around for more than 50 years, with competitors locking toes and battling for three rounds inside a tiny arena known as the “toedium”.
Toe wrestling is now trying to become a serious international sport, with federations, rankings and even the long-term ambition of making it to the Olympics. An application was already sent to the IOC in 1997. It was rejected. They’re planning to try again. And yesterday, somehow, the finals landed in Milan during Fashion Week. And which better support could there be than ?
