During the last Design Week, in the spaces of ALCOVA, Guatemala Diseña con las Manos aimed to showcase the historical, creative, and cultural richness of Guatemala through the talent and vision of its designers, fostering a dialogue between design, art, tradition, and high craftsmanship. The project brought together fourteen design studios, collaborating with Guatemalan artisans to explore the fusion of contemporary creativity with ancestral techniques. The installation that hosted them, set up in Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, was inspired by Temple I of Tikal—known as the Great Jaguar—an iconic 7th-century AD pyramid nearly 40 meters high, a symbol of classical Mayan architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The structure echoed the temple’s monumentality in a scaled-down version. Designed by Idonika Studio with Amarillo Studio, it was a modular and sustainable construction made of wood and braided steel cables, enriched by handcrafted textiles from Casa Edel and a sound installation curated by Near Sound Studio (Barcelona), which enveloped and transported visitors through the sounds of the jungle and Guatemalan landscapes.
