I attended a library conference in Minneapolis, and had to take the time to go to and recognize its significance in our culinary history.
This was one of the best meals of my life, and I ate it solo while watching the Mississippi River flow.
The simplicity and perfection of ingredients was truly moving.
My meal was:
Ancho-brined duck with a blackberry sumac sauce, and duck puposa
Maple beans with candied walnuts (I ordered tepary beans to try to recreate this)
A duck-egg custard with sumac-sprinkled sweet potato chips
A zero-proof cocktail “Okaadaakaaboo” (Carrot Juice) with carrot, sarsaparilla, Mexican vanilla bean, ginger, and maple
Foods that are native and grown on our land are harder to find. I am blessed to live in the Garden State, but it’s hard to have the temptations of “available year round” and food shipped thousands of miles to get here.
