Wind and sea are two of the defining features of Brittany, on the northwest Atlantic side of France. Elements that have undoubtedly contributed to the Breton character — resolute and fiercely independent. Brittany is very much its own world — part of France, but a culture apart as well.

A place that has truly embraced its Breton heritage is the 3-Michelin Star restaurant, Le Coquillage. The window by our table in the small, intimate dining room face the ocean and most of the 10-courses feature seafood. We start with two perfect oysters, silky-smooth… more here https://travelcuriousoften.com/tco-guide/brittany-a-country-within-a-country/

The sheer number of grand, celebrated castles in Loire is staggering. And, as you’d expect, most of these palatial estates have exquisite, perfectly manicured gardens. But nothing amidst all this splendor quite tops Château de Villandry.

An astonishing potager (assortment of vegetables) is changed out seasonally in row after row of meticulously trimmed boxwood edging — 32.5 miles (52 km) to be precise. Accompanying the vegetable beds are 196 yew topiaries, an arbor that extends over a mile, 1,016 lime trees, close to 700 fruit trees and 667 vines. The effect is astonishing and mesmerizing — simultaneously playful and majestic. See more here: https://travelcuriousoften.com/uncategorized/chateau-de-villandry-europes-most-extraordinary-garden/

Photos from a recent trip to Rome where we visited iconic sites with Andrea Bonanni (Fiat 500 Rome Tours). To accomplish this feat, Andrea runs up alleys, back streets and sidewalks, maneuvering as only a tiny Fiat can. Absolutely thrilling! This is the ultimate joy ride. Grazie mille, Andrea! Driving across France, year after year, we’ve always been impressed with Carcassonne — the medieval fortress in the southern Occitanie region. Visible for miles, this spectacular walled city seems like an illusion or movie set floating on top of a hill. You almost expect to see a battalion of Crusaders in full armor galloping off to battle. More on Carcassonne here: https://travelcuriousoften.com/tco-guide/carcassonne-if-these-medieval-walls-could-talk/

One of the most heartstopping images in the French landscape, Mont-Saint-Michel has maintained a solitary watch over the Normandy coastline since 966. Photographed thousands upon thousands of times in every season, it’s hardly surprising that the abbey has become a popular tourist destination — only the Eiffel Tower and Louvre have more visitors in France. As one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations for centuries, the island is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lovely Rouen - the capital of Normandy - famous for its spectacular cathedral, painted by Claude Monet some 30 times and it’s easy to understand his fascination. The church is renowned for its three towers, each completely different. The oldest of the three, Saint- Romain Tower, dates back to the 12th century.

Notre-Dame de Rouen also houses a sarcophagus bearing the image of King Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionhearted. Interestingly, only his heart is interred here — his personal request because of his “love for Normandy.”

Rouen’s Gros-Horloge, is one of the oldest clocks in Europe. More here: https://travelcuriousoften.com/uncategorized/normandy-rouen-bayeux-and-the-worlds-best-butter/

Villa Cimbrone, dating back to the 11th century, graces the highest point of Ravello. We explore the meticulously landscaped gardens and visit the famous Terrazza dell’Infinito (Infinity Terrace). Novelist Gore Vidal, who lived in Ravello for over 30 years, vividly describes the experience: “The most beautiful place that I have ever seen in all my travels is the view from the belvedere of the Villa Cimbrone on a bright winter’s day when the sky and the sea are each so vividly blue that it’s not possible to tell one from the other.”
