What happens when you choose to give up control over the music you compose? Is it ever really possible to be in complete control? These are questions that many artists of the post-war avant-garde began to ask themselves—and not only in music.

In 1967, Allan Kaprow gathered a group of volunteers in Los Angeles to take part in “Fluids”, a happening in which they built a structure out of blocks of ice. In 1968, Italo Calvino wrote “Il castello dei destini incrociati”, entrusting the narrative to the cards of a tarot deck. In 1977, Roland Kayn released “Simultan”, an album in which the sonic outcome of each piece is determined by cybernetic circuits.

Electronics, chance, performers, audiences: aleatory music offers an opportunity to engage with impermanence and unpredictability.

1968.

«Deep down, at the very bottom, he is no longer able to answer the question: “Who am I?”».

Luigi Dallapiccola spent 28 years composing his "Ulisse”, a work that encapsulates not only his experience as a composer but also his experience as a human being. In earlier works, he had already explored existential themes such as free will and humanity’s relationship with a transcendent dimension. In the Homeric story, however, another fundamental question emerges: that of identity. Ulysses becomes the emblem of humanity which, when asked, “Who are you?”, finds itself compelled to answer, “Nobody”.

In this recording, Luigi Dallapiccola speaks about his Ulysses in an interview for RAI in
1968.

How would you play it?

Franco Donatoni wrote “Babai” in the midst of a crisis that he himself described as “ascetic”, brought about by his encounter with the music of John Cage, the writings of the musicologist Mario Bortolotto, and the works of authors such as Kafka, Benn, Musil, and Beckett. From this engagement with “negative thought”, Donatoni developed a compositional approach in which he relinquished control over the performance, leaving the interpretation of the very notation itself to the performers.

There are many ways of making music, and just as many ways of writing it. In this series, we delve into this visual aspect of musical language through selected scores from our archive.

-English version-

The boundaries between musical genres are becoming increasingly blurred, both in the way we listen to music and in how we discover it. New sonic techniques, the emergence of unconventional spaces for listening and experimentation, and encounters between artists from different backgrounds all bear witness to this shift. It is through this constant drive towards the unknown that music continues to reinvent its own language.

The SZ Sugar catalogue celebrates this sense of fluidity. Here, we present a selection of works that accompany and reflect the ongoing evolution of music in this direction.

“Cantata per l’Europa” is one of Ennio Morricone’s absolute music works that speaks most profoundly of the great Maestro and the era in which he lived.

Through the power of orchestra and chorus, the vocal line entrusted to the soprano, and the actor’s narration featuring texts by some of the leading figures of European culture and thought – from Dante to Victor Hugo – the work reveals Morricone’s socio-political commitment, emerging as a musical reflection on our shared destiny, memory, and the relationship between identity and the future.

The video features an excerpt from the concert “Morricone Night. Suite Veneziana”, presented by Teatro La Fenice in collaboration with Rai Cultura, SZ Sugar and CAM Sugar. The concert was broadcast on Rai5 on Thursday 9 July and is now available on RaiPlay.

Performers: Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro La Fenice, Kevin Rhodes, Sara Cortolezzis, Luca Barbareschi and Cesare Bocci.
