There is something so moving about seeing a broken object given a second life.

For Milan-based artisan Anita Cerrato, this isn’t just restoration. It is the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi—repairing shattered ceramics with gold and transforming cracks into something beautiful instead of hiding them.

What touched me most about Anita’s story is that she has created a kind of kintsugi in her own life. After a long career in furniture restoration, she reinvented herself and traveled to Japan to study this extraordinary craft at its source.

In Anita’s atelier, brokenness is not the end of the story. A shattered vase, a treasured bowl, even a damaged photograph is patiently rebuilt, sometimes over months, with care and skill.

Kintsugi reminds us that our cracks do not diminish our value. They are part of our story.
