Today, the second call of the project opens, with the ambitious goal of supporting from all over the world in their daily duty of informing citizens on the many highly complex and multifaceted issues related to science discoveries and technological innovation. I recently had the opportunity to discuss the project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), at the annual meeting of Euprio - European Association of Communication Professionals in Higher Education in , with Marcin Mońko (who first proposed to the ERC to launch a competitive call), Valeria Delle Cave, who organised one of the pilots of the project at the ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI TECNOLOGIA (IIT), and Christine Ro, who was hosted there as a grantee for a month.
We had two very lively and participated sessions, and I think that many of the communication professionals who were there are now considering, or have already decided, to sign in to be listed in our of candidate that is available on the project website. European citizens need and deserve excellent science journalism, and science journalists need and deserve better working conditions and more institutional support, while continuing to cherish their independence.
I am confident that our project – which is carried out by CESJ - Center for Ethics in Science and Journalism, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and coordinator Enspire Science Ltd. – will show that something can be done to start addressing the issue, and to encourage the launch of more initiatives, both similar and complementary.
That said, I invite my colleagues science journalists to apply. In the first round we had 33 applications and awarded 7 grantees (which are starting their residencies in the next few weeks), and I expect to have many excellent proposals in round 2 as well, including some that didn't make it in round 1. The competition will be fierce, but it's worth a try.
