Vida Detenida by is now in print!

Away from the set, Almodóvar turns to photography to make a deeply pop gesture: transforming everyday objects — glasses, flowers, plates, utensils — into secular altars, filled with memory and desire.

These are not simple still lifes, but vida detenida: life held still, yet alive. Each object retains vitality, reacts to light, and changes over time.

There’s no post-production — the focus is on emotion, not perfection. As Almodóvar writes: “What interests me is the ecstasy of the moment, staying alert and capturing the emotion of the instant.”

A fragile, vibrant tension runs through every shot, where the beauty of the everyday becomes sacred.
Never consolatory.

The book is the catalogue of the namesake exhibition held at Grenze Arsenali Fotografici Festival in Verona.

Cinque anni fa ci lasciava il maestro Ennio Morricone. Vogliamo ricordarlo con questa fotografia, in cui Maurizio Baroni, anche lui purtroppo scomparso, gli mostrava con emozione una copia del libro a lui dedicato.

Ricordiamo bene quell’incontro, nell’inverno del 2019. Entrare in casa sua significava varcare la soglia di un luogo quasi sacro. L’atmosfera era solenne, ci metteva soggezione. Davanti a noi c’era una leggenda, un artigiano della musica che aveva saputo elevarsi ben oltre il mestiere, raggiungendo a pieno titolo lo status di artista, qualunque cosa voglia dire davvero questa parola.

Eppure, nonostante la sua fama e la straordinaria lucidità con cui ci accolse, Ennio Morricone rimaneva una figura a suo modo umile, apparentemente indifferente al clamore che lo circondava. Conduceva la sua vita serenamente, accanto alla sua signora, come un nonno qualunque con il vizio della musica.

Come diceva Totò: “I grandi hanno fama, soldi e potere, ma solo l’umiltà rende grandissimi.”

“Skid Row” offers a visual testimony of the American urban landscape in the late 1970s. Charles H. Traub created a series of portraits capturing the tenants of the streets of Uptown Chicago and New York’s Bowery.

As Traub himself explained, “I wanted to see, to try and touch—at least with my camera—the experience of disorientation and loss.” His intent was never voyeuristic, but rather a way to affirm the dignity and humanity of the homeless. These were individuals profoundly different from those on today’s streets, where homelessness is no longer the result of singular destinies, but of vast systemic inequality.

Nelson Algren once asked in A Walk on the Wild Side, “Why is it that the lost ones so often become greater human beings than those who have never been lost in their lives?” Traub’s Skid Row responds to that question by revealing a quiet nobility that binds urban communities, even at their most fractured.

Today, that spirit is too often erased by gentrification and indifference, replaced by a carefully curated urban chic. It’s more vital than ever to document these lives, to remember the essential role of the ‘noble lost’ in shaping the identity and soul of a city.
