On October 9th, director of NORA's debut music video and technical director at our studio, Serena Tripepi took part in a forward-looking panel at MIA Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo in Rome: “The new production pipeline: how game engines are reshaping animation's business.”

Alongside Zoltán Bathó (producer and educator in R&D, real-time and virtual production) and Davide Tromba (CEO of Animoka), and moderated by Cristian Jezdic (producer at beQ Entertainment), the discussion explored how real-time tools and interactive storytelling are transforming animation workflows, unlocking new opportunities for cross-media projects and multiplatform IPs.

It was a pleasure to share Maga Animation's vision and connect with professionals who are pushing the boundaries of what animation can be. Rome offered the perfect setting to reflect on innovation and creativity.

Ever wondered what a virtual idol born from real human creativity looks like? 💜

Meet NORA ノラ, the first Italian digital popstar with a real voice, brought to life by our team at Maga Animation Studio through two years of artistic and technical exploration.
Her debut video, “Beat of a Romance / Cha Cha Cha”, is more than a music release. It’s a handcrafted CG animation project where every movement, every light, every frame was shaped by people, not algorithms.

We used key-frame animation to give NORA a believable presence, working closely with dancers and choreographers to design her performance. No generative AI, just the expressive power of traditional animation.
To build her world, we turned Unreal Engine into a cinematic tool, creating immersive environments and dynamic lighting that respond to the rhythm and emotion of the music. The result is a dreamlike, post-digital space inspired by vaporwave aesthetics, reimagined in a contemporary key.

NORA isn’t just a character. She’s a creative statement. A pop icon that explores identity, alter egos and the future of digital expression, without dystopias and with a strong belief that technology should serve creativity, not replace it.

This is just the beginning. The project is designed to grow across platforms and formats, offering a new take on virtual popstars: not synthetic products, but cultural expressions shaped by human hands.

At our studio in Monza, Italy, technology has always been a key element in merging art and innovation. Our data center is the core where all the behind-the-scenes work happens: rendering, storing, and moving the data that powers our animation and CG pipeline⚡

To mark the anniversary of the release of Katsuhiro Otomo’s groundbreaking animated film , first shown on July 16th, 1988, we’re sharing a short timelapse from our archives: the installation of a custom mural inspired by one of the manga’s most iconic pages.

We decided to name our tech-heart “Akira” because its imagery and atmosphere have always resonated with us. And honestly, something about our data center, with its large cooling systems, LEDs, wiring, and constant hum, felt strangely close to the chamber that holds Akira in the story.

So a piece of underground Neo-Tokyo became part of our everyday space: a daily reminder of the kind of bold, visionary storytelling that shaped our path💡

The power of our technology and creativity, like Akira’s own energy, is kept under control, protected, and perfectly chilled.

Special thanks to Giovanni Suardi, a skilled professional from Monza, who brought the mural to life with precision and care.

Mr. Men Little Miss Mini Adventures, the animated series we produced for Sanrio, is in the spotlight thanks to an in-depth feature recently published by Creative Boom.

We’re grateful to this leading voice in the creative industry for showcasing our work, and to journalist Garrick Webster for the opportunity and for highlighting the design process behind the series.

The article includes valuable contributions from director, writer and animation supervisor Francesca Pietrobelli and production designer Alessia Garofalo, who offer behind-the-scenes insights into the visual development and creative direction that shaped the aesthetic and narrative identity of the project.

Recreating this iconic world demanded a technically rigorous and creatively cohesive approach, a challenge that the Maga Animation Studio team embraced with a dedicated focus on storytelling through design.

We extend our sincere thanks to Sanrio for involving us in such a meaningful and creatively rewarding project!

Our Story

In 1996, collaboration with the Disney Academy, the studio completed its first short-film experiment in 3D, The Room (2'), which was followed a year later by Hunny (8'). In 1998 Maga began collaborating with Disney Channel on small projects, promos, animated opening sequences and post-production intervention. The studio grew in size and numerous idents and promos were developed, which were awarded international prizes. In fact Maga and Disney Channel Italia won two Gold Promax Europe Awards, one “honorable mention” and various accolades at the American BDA/Promax. Between 1999 and 2000 an audio department was created and the studio became independent in all the production phases, directly controlling the artistic and technical quality of every project it dealt with. At the same time as the projects for Disney Channel, in 2001 Maga Animation completed various new short-films: Rags was shown at Imagina 2002. In 2003 the studio’s experimentation on interstitial and serial formats began and the first series for Disney Channel Italia:The Experiments, was realized. It got into the final at the BDA of New York in 2004, along with a project by Aardman Animation, and it was dubbed into various languages. In 2004 the short-film Mr Mille won the “Pitch Me!” competition at Cartoons on the Bay As well as receiving other tributes at international festivals. For the Aichi Expo in 2005 the 3D animation for the film event directed by the great master Bob Robert Wilson was realized. In 2006 the first series in 3D animation to be completely produced and realized in Italy was completed, directed by Bruno Bozzetto for Animation Band and RAI Fiction (I Cosi - 26 x 5'). In the same year The Olympig/Go!Go!PIG! winter session was completed. This was a TV series by Maga Animation which was acquired by Nickelodeon Italia and was selected at the festival of Annecy in 2006. The studio’s productions have gradually become more and more complex and they are now viewed worldwide. Maga Animation realizes television promos and ads in 2D and 3D for Disney characters and properties such as Stitch, American Dragon, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and more. In 2005 the graphics package and the international Christmas campaign for The Incredibles of the Disney channel was created and the studio worked on the worldwide campaign of Chicken Little for Christmas 2006. From 2005 Maga produces and realizes different TV series such as Psicovip, directed by Bruno Bozzetto with the characters Minivip and Supervip, comes from the original director’s feature film, “Vip My superhero Brother” and Acqua in bocca with Rai fiction by the direction of the master Guido Manuli. Today the company proceed in new challenge, improve new styles, art and technology research also in stereoscopic 3D production, VR, and on all digital devices. All the team work hard with the aim to create together with international partners a magic never seen before...
