The sailing boat Madleen (*Barcarole), carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists, was seized by the Israeli navy while attempting to deliver symbolic aid to Gaza. Intercepted in international waters, it was taken to Ashdod. The activists are safe, but Israel accuses them of spreading propaganda. The operation has sparked international protests.

Although widely referred to as a “ship” in media reports, Madleen is technically a sailing boat — not a ship — measuring approximately 18 meters in length. Under maritime definitions, it qualifies as a pleasure craft or yacht.

Azzam in Abu Dhabi, the world’s largest private yacht!

Azzam is a private super yacht built by German shipyard Lürssen Yachts. At 180 metres (590 ft) in length, it is the longest private motor yacht in the world. It has a beam of 20.8 metres (68 ft) and an unusually shallow draft of 4.3 m (14 ft 1 in). The yacht was delivered in 2013. It can travel in excess of 32 knots (59 km/h; 37 mph) powered by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a total power output of 35,048 kW (47,000 hp). Azzam was commissioned by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates (until his death in 2022). The cost of construction of the yacht was approximately $600m. The yacht is listed for charter without a price. However, it is not available for charter. The charter listing is aimed to avoid European taxation, as charter yachts are exempt from property tax. Azzam accommodates up to 36 guests in supreme comfort, and to look after them, there is a crew of 70/80 people. The exterior design of the yacht was provided by Nauta Design (Italy), while interior design was by Christophe Leoni.
