“A cantunera” in Sicilian culture is a very simple thing but full of meaning. The word comes from the greek “kanduni” and it literally means corner. Traditionally, the cantunera is the corner of a house or a building where two roads meet, and in Sicily it has always been more than just architecture; it’s a little stage of daily life.

Here are the main ways a cantunera has been used:
• Meeting place – In small towns, people used to gather “a la cantunera” to chat, especially in the evenings. It was like the local news channel, where gossip, stories, and news were shared.
• Resting spot – Many old cantunere had a little stone ledge or step where elderly people would sit, watching life pass by and greeting neighbours.
• Playground – For children, the cantunera was the perfect spot to play games, hide during hide-and-seek, or kick a ball against the wall.
• Singing and serenades – In the past, young men would sometimes sing love songs “sutta la cantunera” (under the corner) to their beloved, especially if her house was nearby.
• Religious and symbolic use – Many cantunere still hold small shrines or sacred images (like the Madonna or a saint) to protect the crossroads and bless those passing by. These became places where people would stop for a quick prayer.
• Everyday reference point – Directions were given by saying “ci vediamo alla cantunera” (let’s meet at the corner). It was a shared landmark in communities where everyone knew each other.

So the cantunera is more than just a corner, it’s a social space, a lookout point, a meeting spot, a place of devotion, and even a stage for daily theatre.

“A cantunera” nella cultura siciliana è una cosa semplice ma piena di significato. La parola viene dal greco “kanduni” e significa letteralmente angolo. Tradizionalmente la cantunera è l’angolo di una casa o di un edificio dove si incontrano due strade, e in Sicilia è sempre stata qualcosa di più dell’architettura, è un piccolo palcoscenico della vita quotidiana.

Ecco i principali modi in cui la cantunera è stata vissuta:
• Luogo di incontro – Nei paesi la gente si ritrovava “a la cantunera” per chiacchierare, soprattutto la sera. Era come un telegiornale locale, dove giravano notizie, storie e pettegolezzi.
• Punto di riposo – Molte cantunere avevano un gradino o una pietra dove gli anziani si sedevano a guardare la vita passare e salutare i vicini.
• Spazio di gioco – Per i bambini la cantunera era il posto perfetto per giocare, nascondersi, fare nascondino o ti**re la palla contro il muro.
• Serenate e canti – Un tempo i giovani cantavano canzoni d’amore “sutta la cantunera” (sotto l’angolo) per la ragazza amata, soprattutto se abitava lì vicino.
• Uso religioso e simbolico – Molte cantunere hanno ancora piccole edicole o immagini sacre (come la Madonna o un santo) per proteggere l’incrocio e benedire chi passava. Erano anche luoghi dove fermarsi a dire una preghiera.
• Punto di riferimento – Ci si dava appuntamento dicendo “ci videmu a la cantunera” (ci vediamo all’angolo). Un punto che tutti conoscevano.

La cantunera non è solo un angolo , è spazio sociale, punto d’osservazione, luogo d’incontro, di devozione, e anche un piccolo teatro della vita di ogni giorno.

Sicily is not just an island, it feels like a whole world. The Greeks left temples and theatres, the Romans their roads and villas, then came the Byzantines with mosaics, the Arabs with gardens and citrus, the Normans with their cathedrals, the Spaniards with their baroque style. All of it stayed, nothing ever really disappeared, it all lives together in one place.

And then there are the people. Sicilians welcome you like family, sometimes too much, always with food, with stories, with this warmth that you don’t forget. They exaggerate, they speak loud, they live with passion, sometimes it feels like too much, but it’s what makes it real. That energy makes you feel part of it even if you just got here.

That’s why Sicily leaves you in awe, it’s not only the beauty and the history, it’s also the people that make you feel at home.

La Sicilia non è solo un’isola, sembra quasi un mondo intero. I Greci hanno lasciato templi e teatri, i Romani le strade e le ville, poi i Bizantini con i mosaici, gli Arabi con i giardini e gli agrumi, i Normanni con le cattedrali, gli Spagnoli con il barocco. Tutto è rimasto, niente è sparito davvero, tutto vive insieme nello stesso posto.

E poi ci sono le persone. I siciliani ti accolgono come famiglia, a volte anche troppo, sempre con del cibo, con storie, con un calore che non dimentichi. Esagerano, parlano forte, vivono con passione, a volte sembra troppo, ma è proprio questo che li rende veri. Quell’energia ti fa sentire parte di loro anche se sei appena arrivato.

Ecco perché la Sicilia ti lascia senza parole, non è solo la bellezza e la storia, sono le persone che ti fanno sentire a casa.
