One city, different artistic visions.

It’s been a couple of years that we at 89books have been working on Quaderno Palermo: a series of photobooks that explores multiple perceptions of the city. Going through the artistic residency at our studio, each photographer develops new layers of the city, both tender and harsh ones, while also bringing their unique visual style.

So what’s Palermo like for you? Dark and uncanny as seen by Miron Zownir or slow, soft-hearted and nostalgic as in the Elise Wouters’s shots? What’s sure is that the city is not a fixed set of features but a continuous negotiation between the world and observer—and we’re always excited to see how artists deliver a new interpretation.

Books mentioned: Quaderno Palermo no.4 by Miron Zownir (2024) and Voglia by Elise Wouters (2023).

From archives: You Will Find Me If You Want Me in the Garden by Federico Borselli, published by 89books in 2024.

Stepping into majestic woods and fields of the Tuscan country side, Borselli shows hypnotising scenes full of visual intensity. These black and white series invites us into a world of a slower encounter with the environment, getting to know all living creatures who inhabit it, all along documenting its tremendous beauty.

You Will Find Me If You Want Me In the Garden (unless it’s pouring down with rain)

OPENING TONIGHT: come visit Roots gallery in Palermo for the opening of the new photographic exhibition with the works of Melania Messina and Alfredo D’Amato🌪️

We’re all used to a certain image of Sicily, but this exhibition invites you to encounter its different sides: one marked by abusive constructions and wounded environments in a Dystopian Sicilian Landscape project by Melania Messina, and another shaped by the journeys of African migrants for whom the island becomes the threshold of Europe, as seen by Alfredo D’Amato in his project “Metaleli Bahri”.

Join us tonight at 18.00 for the opening at Roots Gallery. Both photographic projects will also be available as photobooks — to browse through or to take home. A stasera!

A presto!

“Morocco is a kind of country that has an immediate, direct physical presence, yet it continuously slips away from any attempt to be defined or contained”. In his debut book “Moroccan Mint”, Andrea Angelino Catella is taking an attempt to grasp the texture of the life in the African country.

By offering unexpected juxtapositions, Catella is guiding us through these images creating a memory-like sequence: no captions, no names or particularly recognisable places. Just a visual representation of something that can be hardly explained verbally yet so compelling and exciting.

Moroccan Mint is soon to be available at our online store, which is under maintenance right now. For this period only, we’re giving a special price of €35. Drop us a DM or place an order directly at [email protected] 💚

See what’s inside our all-time bestseller MARZIA’S FAMILY by Mauro D’Agati: an observation of a simple working class Sicilian family, born when the photographer met Marzia on the beach — a candid, radiant kid who emanates joy and self-confidence.

What started as an observation of family vacations on an illegal camping lot in the industrial area of Termini Imerese, the project soon grew into an intricate family saga, where portraits evolve as the time goes by.

This edition is a collection of the shots made from 2008 to 2022, and is available at our store. ❗️Please be aware that our website is currently getting a small rebuild behind the scenes, so feel free to reach us directly via DMs or email at [email protected]

“I saw Kiev again, as it was in the days of Maidan”. In the latest volumes of the WAR series, Oleksandr Glyadyelov found himself amid the rumble of rockets, one of which hit the children’s hospital OHMADIT in 2024.

“When I arrived there, I saw and started taking pictures of thousands of volunteers helping . Thousands of people are working together, from all over Kiev, streams of citizens, despite the danger of new rocket attacks, are going to OHMADIT with essentials.”

Glyadyelov’s electrifying testimony of the war in Ukraine is available now in volumes XI and XII. Discover these and the whole series while we’re going to be at for A Bigger Book Fair, starting this Friday in London.👁️

A presto!

📍Roots Gallery, via Castrofilippo 40, Palermo
(Next to Piazza Maggione)

Together with Roots Gallery, we opened a new photo exhibition last week in Palermo: along with Veronica Barbato’s work, there was a very special project made by Arturo Russo—Alessandro.

A brief encounter on the way to Sicily brought Arturo to meet Alessandro—a humble, yet strangely magnetic person. Ever since the photographer would capture his life, with a permission of Alessandro, showing us different angles of such alluring personality.

Come to the Roots Gallery to discover the project and to flip the pages of the eponymous book, that is also available for sale. The exhibition is open until 23 of May🙌
