HOW TO BECOME A REGISTERED BUILDER

To become a registered builder in Nigeria, follow these steps ¹:

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements
- Obtain a relevant academic qualification in building and construction-related programs from a recognized university or polytechnic.
- Some accepted qualifications include ND, HND, or a degree in Building or related fields.

Step 2: Join the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB)
- Register and get your details evaluated by NIOB.
- Validate your professional knowledge through examinations.
- Become certified as a professional builder.

Step 3: Register with the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON)
- Download and fill the NIOB membership form, then submit it to your State Chapter for attestation.
- Make payment through Remita or the designated bank account.
- CORBON will review your application and verify your qualifications and experience.

Step 4: Obtain a Certificate of Experience
- Get employed as a builder with a view to obtaining a certificate of experience.
- Acquire practical experience under the supervision of a registered builder.
- Obtain a certificate of experience issued by CORBON.

Types of Registration
- *Full Registration*: Requires approved qualifications, certificate of experience, and good character.
- *Provisional Registration*: For those about to be employed as builders, with approved qualifications and good character.
- *Temporary Registration*: For non-citizens with approved qualifications, employed for a specific project ².

COMMON MISTAKES DURING SETTING OUT OF A BUILDING.

Setting out is the foundation of every construction project. Once you make errors here, the whole building suffers. Unfortunately, many people still get it wrong because of carelessness or lack of supervision.

Here are the most common mistakes made during setting out:

1. WRONG BASELINE
Starting with a wrong reference line causes the entire building to shift out of position.

2. POOR SQUARING
Failure to apply the 3-4-5 rule or Pythagoras theorem leads to crooked walls.

3. INACCURATE MEASUREMENTS
Wrong tape readings or failure to double-check dimensions can distort the building size.

4. IGNORING PROFILES
Setting pegs too close to trenches instead of using profile boards leads to loss of reference lines once excavation starts.

5. ENCROACHMENT
Not checking boundary lines properly may cause the building to cross into another person’s land or not fit inside the intended land in a proper manner.

6. NO PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION
Allowing untrained hands to set out without a certified professional increases chances of errors.

👉 Remember: “If you get the setting out wrong, the whole project goes wrong.” Accuracy and supervision are non-negotiable.
