▪ THE PIECE
Duet No. 4 in A minor is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s four Duets for solo harpsichord (BWV 802–805), works of extraordinary concentration and intensity.

In this fourth Duet, Bach reduces his compositional means to their very essence, yet it is precisely within these constraints that the writing becomes freer and more incisive. Every detail matters. Chromatic inflections and unexpected harmonies continually reshape the tension of the piece.

It is music that seems to burn from within while remaining held within a rigorous structure. . . . . . . .
▪ THE PAINTING FEATURED ON THE SINGLE COVER

Victor Paukštelis is a Lithuanian painter whose work is characterised by a powerful use of colour and figures shaped with formal rigour yet charged with an intense inner force.

His works bring together order and combustion, structure and tension—qualities that make his art a natural counterpart to Bach’s music. . . . . . . .
▪ THE CONNETCION BETWEEN THE PIECE AND THE PAINTING

Hélène Papadopoulos describes the relationship in these words:

This painting reminds me of the Duet in A minor because of the contrast between its rigour and its inner combustion. The figure is firmly constructed, as though governed by an imposed order; and yet that order is disturbed from within by a force that unsettles it without destroying it.

This is very close to what I feel in the fourth Duet. The yellow traces in the painting alter its entire balance, just as the chromatic inflections and unexpected harmonies transform the tension of the Duet.

What strikes me most is that the figure remains standing, held together by its structure even as it seems to burn from within. In the same way, it is the form itself that contains the intensity of the Duet.

by is an album that bridges centuries, cultures, and musical traditions through the unique dialogue of two string instruments and two voices.

Works by Dowland, Purcell, Bach, Wolf, Bartók, and Britten meet traditional Irish melodies in a repertoire reimagined for this singular ensemble, where voice and strings continuously intertwine and transform.

Like the Nymph that gives the album its name, the music is light, fluid, and ever-changing. Vocal and instrumental lines merge, separate, and reconnect in a refined play of timbres, moving effortlessly between song, whisper, pizzicato, and percussive effects.
More than a collection of arrangements, Nymph is a poetic reflection on tradition, giving the music a new perspective and vision.
