Good morning, Gambia!
Thirty-year-old Alagie Sarr, has been reported missing at sea while working on board a Chinese fishing trawler.
Alagie, who got married in April this year, was said to have drowned after falling overboard.
According to a phone call received by his wife on Wednesday, he was attempting to retrieve his prayer mat, which slipped into the water, when the incident occurred.
But the family has cast doubt on this account, describing it as “unimaginable” that Alagie would risk his life for an item so easily replaced. They said the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear and troubling.
Alagie’s body has not been recovered, and despite repeated visits and inquiries to the relevant authorities, his family said little progress has been made in the investigation. Concerns are growing that the case may be brushed under the carpet.
“We need closure and the chance to give him a proper burial,” said a relative.
The family is also questioning why the crew members, including the observer on board the trawler, were not detained by police as part of the investigation.
