A teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been taken into custody after a viral video showed the assault of a female student, triggering public outrage and renewed concern over discipline in schools.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was arrested by a patrol team from the Nyinahini District Police Command on June 8, 2026, at about 7:00pm. The arrest followed reports linked to the disturbing footage that circulated widely on social media.

The victim has been named as 18-year-old Patience Chibu, a student of the same school.

According to a statement issued by Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Antiwi of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation involving the suspect, who also serves as a hostel caretaker, and some male students over alleged misconduct within the hostel.

What began as a disciplinary confrontation reportedly escalated after a misunderstanding, leading to the teacher physically assaulting the student.

Footage from the incident shows the teacher striking the student repeatedly before allegedly lifting and throwing her to the ground, while bystanders can be heard appealing for him to stop and reminding him that she was a girl.

Following the circulation of the video, tensions reportedly rose within the school community. Some students are said to have retaliated by throwing stones at the suspect and calling in youths from the surrounding town to the hostel in what appeared to be a planned attack.

The situation was eventually contained after the swift intervention of the Ghana Police Service patrol team.

Authorities have since issued a Police Medical Report Form to the victim for examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in custody assisting investigators.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and to rely on lawful channels in addressing disputes, warning against acts of retaliation or mob response.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service confirmed the arrest earlier and indicated that the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate had begun investigations into the matter. The service later clarified that both the teacher and the student had undergone medical examination.

So far, no additional disciplinary measures have been announced against the teacher, who remains in custody as investigations continue.

The football community and the Gbese Traditional Area are mourning the loss of Nii Ayi-Bonte II, the Gbese Mantse and former Hearts of Oak executive, who has passed away following a brief illness.

Known in private life as Thomas Okine, the respected traditional ruler died on Saturday, June 6, 2026. News of his passing has sparked tributes from both sports enthusiasts and members of the Ga community, where he served for nearly two decades as a traditional leader.

Nii Ayi-Bonte II occupied a prominent place in the history of Hearts of Oak, particularly during one of the club's most celebrated periods. As a key figure behind the scenes, he was part of the leadership structure that oversaw the Phobians' dominance of Ghanaian football throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, a period that also saw the club earn recognition across Africa.

His death came only days after he made a public appearance during ceremonies marking the lifting of the annual ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of the Homowo festival. During the event, he appeared visibly weak and was carried through the principal streets of Gbese by his subjects.

Ghanaians may soon be required to verify their identity before accessing p0rnographic websites if a new government proposal receives Cabinet approval.

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, revealed that plans are underway to introduce age and identity verification measures aimed at preventing children from viewing explicit online content.

Speaking at the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values, the Ningo-Prampram MP said the policy is currently being developed and will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration.

Under the proposed framework, individuals seeking access to adult websites could be required to provide a valid form of identification, such as a driver's licence or a Ghana Card, before being allowed entry.

"We're working on going to Cabinet on that to make sure that before you access any X-r@ted site, you must put either your driver's licence or your national ID card so that we know who you are and who is going to that site to prevent children from being exposed to such content," he said.

The Accra High Court has ordered that Abronye DC remain in police custody after he failed to meet a key bail requirement mandating the submission of his passport to the court registry.

The decision was delivered on Thursday, June 4, 2026, by Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, sitting at the Accra High Court. The judge rejected an application that sought to amend the bail terms and instead ruled that the accused must stay in custody until the passport is handed over.

According to the court, the failure to comply with its earlier directive amounted to a serious disregard for judicial authority. In her ruling, Justice Abdul-Bassit stated:

“The court made specific orders directing the applicant to deposit his passport at the registry of the court. The applicant has failed to comply with the order, claiming that the passport is in the custody of the High Commission of the United Kingdom. This constituted a flagrant disrespect for the court’s order. This court will not condone,” Justice Abdul-Bassit said.

Abronye DC is currently facing trial on two counts: publication of false news and offensive conduct likely to provoke a breach of the peace. The case stems from alleged comments he made about a Circuit Court judge, which prosecutors argue were false and capable of undermining public confidence in the judiciary.

Liverpool FC have announced the immediate departure of head coach Arne Slot, bringing an end to a two-year spell that included Premier League success and consecutive Champions League qualification campaigns.

The club confirmed on Saturday that work has already begun to identify and appoint a new manager following Slot’s exit.

Slot arrived at Anfield in June 2024 and made an immediate impact, steering Liverpool to their 20th English league title in his debut season. His achievements during the 2024-25 campaign earned him the LMA Manager of the Year award, while the Reds also progressed to the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League round of 16.

The Dutch coach followed up that title-winning season by securing another top-four finish in 2025-26, ensuring Liverpool’s return to Europe’s elite competition. The club also advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League during that campaign.

In a joint statement, Liverpool’s owners paid tribute to Slot’s contribution on and off the pitch, while explaining the reasoning behind the decision to part ways.

Parliament has approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, reviving one of Ghana’s most hotly debated pieces of legislation after introducing a number of amendments to its provisions.

Commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, the legislation seeks to criminalise LGBTQ activities in Ghana. However, lawmakers included new exemptions that shield certain professionals and institutions from penalties that could arise under the proposed law.

Among those exempted are lawyers who provide legal counsel or representation to individuals identified as LGBTQ. Under the amended bill, legal practitioners carrying out their professional duties will not face sanctions.

Journalists and media organisations have also been excluded from punishment when reporting on LGBTQ-related matters as part of legitimate news coverage and current affairs reporting. The same protection extends to healthcare professionals, including doctors, surgeons, psychologists and counsellors who offer medical, psychological or therapeutic services to LGBTQ persons.

The amendments triggered strong resistance from the Minority Caucus, which argued that the changes effectively acknowledge shortcomings in the version of the bill that had previously been forwarded to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent.

Despite those objections, Parliament proceeded to pass the amended legislation.

The first group of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa has landed in Ghana, arriving at about 3:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27 at Accra International Airport.

Their return comes after government assurances that any Ghanaian in South Africa who wished to come home would be assisted, following reports of xenophobic attacks in parts of the country. The evacuees in this initial batch number 300.

Ahead of the arrivals, authorities had outlined a support framework for those being brought back. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a public notice, stated that arrangements were in place to ensure safe return and smooth reintegration for affected citizens.

According to the statement, all evacuees will be enrolled in a package of assistance measures intended to help them re-establish themselves in Ghana.

As part of the immediate relief response, returnees are expected to receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” from the government.

Lawyers representing the detained Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, have moved to secure his release by filing a bail application before a Dutch court, according to disclosures by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor. The development comes amid reports that the legislator is being investigated in the Netherlands over suspected fraud and money laundering.

Speaking on Joy FM’s PM Express programme, the South Dayi MP confirmed that Dutch authorities are handling the matter as part of broader financial crime inquiries. He stressed that no judicial body has reached a verdict and maintained that the MP remains protected by the principle of presumption of innocence.

According to him, the allegations should not be treated as settled facts. “It is an allegation, my brother,” Mr Dafeamekpor said during the interview, urging restraint as investigations continue.

He further revealed that the bail application was submitted on Tuesday, with the legal team pushing for a hearing within the week. He expressed confidence that the court would consider granting temporary release while the case is still under investigation.
