What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements. Organized by 60+ WorldWide Fund for Nature (WWF), it encourages individuals, businesses, communities, and governments around the world to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to protecting our planet. The event takes place every year on the last Saturday of March from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time.
How It Started
Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when more than two million people and thousands of businesses switched off their lights to raise awareness about climate change. Since then, it has grown into a global movement celebrated in over 190 countries and territories.
Around the world, communities mark the occasion with candle-light gatherings, beach clean-ups, nature walks, and environmental awareness events. Hotels, resorts, and businesses also take part by dimming lights and promoting sustainable practices.
Why Earth Hour Matters
Earth Hour is more than turning off lights. It is a reminder that small actions can create big change. The movement encourages people to reduce energy consumption, protect biodiversity, and support solutions for climate change.
