Three Somali wild ass foals — Bruce, Amy and Suzan — were born within just nine days at . A fourth is expected in the coming weeks.
The species is Critically Endangered. The last population estimate cited by the zoo, dating back to 2014, suggested that no more than around 200 individuals remained in the wild — possibly far fewer.

Agnes and Vonathan have arrived from the Netherlands and France respectively. Following a gradual introduction, the two ring-tailed vontsira (Galidia elegans), a carnivore native to Madagascar, are now living together at . They are currently the only pair of the species held at a UK zoo, and it is hoped they will go on to breed.
Recognisable by their reddish-brown fur and distinctive ringed tails, these small carnivores are skilled hunters. The species remains relatively widespread across Madagascar and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its forest habitats continue to be affected by deforestation, agricultural expansion, logging and mining.

Si chiamano Agnes e Vonathan e arrivano rispettivamente dai Paesi Bassi e dalla Francia. Dopo un periodo di inserimento graduale, le due manguste dalla coda ad anelli (Galidia elegans), specie originaria del Madagascar, sono ora insieme al Jersey Zoo. Sono l’unica coppia della specie attualmente presente in un parco zoologico del Regno Unito e lo zoo spera che possa riprodursi.
Con il caratteristico mantello bruno-rossastro e la lunga coda ad anelli, questi piccoli carnivori sono abili predatori. In Madagascar la specie è ancora ampiamente distribuita e classificata Least Concern dalla IUCN, ma i suoi habitat forestali sono sottoposti alla pressione di deforestazione, espansione agricola, sfruttamento del legname e attività minerarie.

A female drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) has been born to first-time mother Akira at . The youngster is already staying close to her mother within the park’s multi-species rainforest habitat, while experienced females in the group are also playing an important role in this early stage.
The drill is among Africa’s most threatened primates, with wild populations declining mainly because of habitat destruction and hunting. The birth brings BIOPARC Valencia’s group to nine individuals — the largest in Spain and the third largest in Europe.

È una femmina il piccolo di drillo (Mandrillus leucophaeus) nato da Akira, madre per la prima volta. Il piccolo rimane vicino alla madre nell’habitat che ricrea la foresta africana, mentre le femmine più esperte del gruppo contribuiscono a questa delicata prima fase.
Il drillo è tra i primati africani più minacciati, con popolazioni in diminuzione soprattutto a causa della distruzione dell’habitat e della caccia. Con questa nascita, il Bioparco di Valencia ospita ora nove individui: il gruppo più numeroso della Spagna e il terzo più grande d’Europa.

A juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was rescued off the coast of Maccarese after being found with a longline fishing hook lodged in its mouth and attached to a floating marker. Transferred to ‘s Sea Turtle First Aid Centre, veterinarians successfully removed the hook and began intensive treatment.
Unable to swim and feed properly for several days, the turtle arrived weighing just over two kilograms. Within two days it was eating again, and only four days later it had already started to regain weight. If its recovery continues, it could be released back into the Mediterranean within the next few weeks.

Una giovane Caretta caretta è stata salvata dopo essere stata trovata al largo di Maccarese con un amo da palamito conficcato nella bocca e collegato a una lenza con una tanica galleggiante. Trasferita al Centro di Primo Soccorso per le tartarughe marine di Zoomarine, è stata sottoposta all’asportazione chirurgica dell’amo e alle cure veterinarie necessarie.
Rimasta per giorni senza riuscire ad alimentarsi e a immergersi correttamente, la tartaruga pesava poco più di due chilogrammi al momento del recupero. Dopo appena due giorni ha ripreso a mangiare e, in meno di una settimana, ha già iniziato a recuperare peso. Se continuerà a rispondere positivamente alle cure, nelle prossime settimane potrà tornare in mare.

A Critically Endangered Sumatran elephant has been born at home to the only Sumatran elephants in Europe. The calf arrived after a remarkably quick 20-minute labour and was immediately surrounded by the herd’s females, who welcomed and protected the newborn with their trunks—a powerful reminder of the extraordinary social bonds that define elephant families.
Fewer and fewer Sumatran elephants survive in the wild as Indonesia’s forests continue to disappear. This birth is more than good news for one zoo: it is an important milestone for the European conservation programme working to safeguard one of the planet’s most threatened elephant populations.

Allo Zoo Aquarium di Madrid è nato un elefante di Sumatra, sottospecie classificata In Pericolo Critico dalla Lista Rossa della IUCN. Lo zoo spagnolo ospita gli unici elefanti di Sumatra presenti in Europa e la nascita rappresenta un importante traguardo per il programma europeo di conservazione della specie.
Il piccolo è venuto alla luce dopo un parto durato appena venti minuti ed è stato subito circondato e protetto dalle altre femmine del gruppo, che hanno accolto il nuovo nato con le loro proboscidi e le tipiche vocalizzazioni sociali degli elefanti. At , in Italy, the answer is Italy’s first Pantanal habitat, where giant anteaters, South American tapirs and rheas now live together. Reaching this milestone took three months of gradual introductions and behavioural monitoring to ensure each animal adapted at its own pace.
The most curious resident? Alba, the tapir, who still follows the giant anteaters wherever they go. Meanwhile, the anteaters spend their days exploring with their long snouts and tongues, while the rheas prefer to keep to the open grassland.
The new 3,000-square-metre habitat supports the European “Wetlands for Life” campaign and highlights one of the world’s most threatened ecosystems. The giant anteater and South American tapir are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, while the greater rhea is classified as Near Threatened.

Al parco Natura Viva la risposta è il nuovo Pantanal, l’unico habitat in Italia dove convivono formichieri giganti, tapiri sudamericani e nandù. Un risultato raggiunto dopo tre mesi di inserimenti graduali e monitoraggio comportamentale, rispettando i tempi e le esigenze di ogni animale.

Double birth at Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna, where two South American sea lion pups were born in early and mid-July. The youngsters are currently living with their mothers in a dedicated nursery area, where visitors can already watch them take their first swims.
Swimming is instinctive in this species: South American sea lions can swim from birth. For now, however, the pups stay close to their mothers, gradually becoming more confident as they explore their surroundings.
Native to the coasts of South America, the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Beneath the surface, it is a remarkable diver: thanks to high concentrations of myoglobin in its muscles, it stores large amounts of oxygen and can remain underwater far longer than humans. The longest dive recorded in the wild lasted 12 minutes.

Doppia nascita allo Zoo di Schönbrunn, a Vienna, dove all’inizio e a metà luglio sono nati due piccoli di otaria sudamericana. I nuovi arrivati vivono insieme alle rispettive madri in un’area dedicata e sono già visibili al pubblico durante i loro primi tuffi.
Nell’otaria sudamericana il nuoto è una capacità innata: i piccoli sanno nuotare fin dalla nascita. Per il momento, però, rimangono quasi sempre accanto alla madre, iniziando solo gradualmente a esplorare l’ambiente circostante.

Five fennec fox pups have been born at , where they spent their first weeks hidden inside an underground den with their mother, just as they would in the wild.
Now about a month old, the pups have started weaning, while their mother Bella continues to care for them. Born as part of the European EEP conservation programme, they belong to the world’s smallest canid: an adult fennec weighs just one kilogram.
Native to the deserts of North Africa, the fennec (Vulpes zerda) is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its oversized ears—accounting for around 20% of its body surface—help dissipate heat and detect even the slightest movements beneath the sand.

Al Bioparco di Roma sono nati cinque piccoli di fennec, che hanno trascorso le prime settimane di vita al riparo nella tana scavata dai genitori, proprio come avviene in natura.
A circa un mese dalla nascita hanno iniziato lo svezzamento, mentre la madre Bella continua ad accudirli. Nati nell’ambito del programma europeo EEP, appartengono al più piccolo canide del mondo: da adulto il fennec pesa appena un chilogrammo.
Diffuso nei deserti del Nord Africa, il fennec (Vulpes zerda) è classificato dalla Lista Rossa della IUCN come a Minore Preoccupazione (LC). Le sue grandi orecchie, che rappresentano circa il 20% della superficie corporea, funzionano come efficienti radiatori naturali e gli permettono di individuare anche le prede che si muovono sotto la sabbia.

As the fourth heatwave of the summer arrives, fish-filled ice cakes have become a daily enrichment for the nine bottlenose dolphins at , home to Italy’s largest social dolphin group.
Underwater, every dolphin behaves differently. Paco and Leah move away from the group, Luna and Maya rush from one ice cake to another, Indy quickly finishes his own before taking Zeus’s, while Thai collects the smallest ice cubes together in its mouth.
These frozen enrichments combine feeding, play and social interaction, while helping dolphins cope with extreme temperatures. Meanwhile, the 7.5 million litres of seawater are kept below 28°C, within the species’ optimal welfare range.
The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is still listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, but warming seas, bycatch, pollution and declining fish stocks are increasing the pressures it faces in the wild.

Con la quarta ondata di calore dell’estate, le torte di ghiaccio ripiene di pesce sono protagoniste degli arricchimenti quotidiani per i nove tursiopi di Zoomarine, il gruppo sociale di delfini più numeroso d’Italia.
Sott’acqua ogni individuo segue una strategia diversa. Paco e Leah si allontanano dal gruppo, Luna e Maya passano da una torta all’altra, Indy finisce subito la propria e poi va da Zeus, mentre Thai raccoglie insieme in bocca i cubetti di ghiaccio più piccoli.
Questi arricchimenti uniscono alimentazione, gioco e interazione sociale, aiutando i delfini durante le giornate più calde. Intanto i 7,5 milioni di litri d’acqua salata vengono mantenuti sotto i 28 °C, nel range ideale per la specie.

The two golden snub-nosed monkey babies born this year at are now officially called Zhenzhen and Xi Le, names chosen by more than 8,600 people during the traditional Chinese 100-day ceremony.

🇮🇹 𝗡𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶. 𝗠𝗮 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲
I due piccoli di rinopiteco dorato nati quest’anno a Pairi Daiza si chiamano ufficialmente Zhenzhen e Xi Le, nomi scelti da oltre 8.600 persone durante la tradizionale cerimonia cinese dei 100 giorni.
Ma la vera notizia va ben oltre i loro nomi. Il rinopiteco dorato (Rhinopithecus roxellana) è classificato In Pericolo (Endangered) nella Lista Rossa della IUCN. Dopo decenni di perdita dell’habitat, oggi la specie mostra incoraggianti segnali di ripresa grazie alla protezione delle foreste e ai programmi di conservazione avviati in Cina.
Ogni nuova nascita rafforza il futuro della specie. E oggi, quelle due piccole vittorie hanno finalmente un nome.
