This coming May, for the space of a few days, Geneva will become nothing less than the world capital of jewellery.
While major jewellery auctions have been a regular feature in Geneva since the late 1960s, GemGenève has really added a fresh dynamic to the market since 2018. The record attendance at the show’s most recent edition (4,970 visitors) illustrates how the event, founded by Ronny Totah and Thomas Faerber, has gradually become a firm fixture in the diaries of professionals and collectors the world over.

César Gabler Santelices, visual artist:
"Hoda Madi’s paintings can be understood, at first glance, as abstract works. There are no recognizable images or direct figurative references in them; vast chromatic fields dominate the surface, imposing a rough, worn, or even abrasive quality. As such, they seem to belong to a pictorial tradition in which color and materiality operate as constitutive elements of the work.
Madi’s practice could be associated both with the tradition of Color Field painting and—perhaps more evidently—with Informalism, marked by its interest in surfaces, matter, and the visual and symbolic effects of the formless. This reading is not incorrect; however, it is necessarily incomplete".

The exhibition brings together seminal works from five of the artist’s celebrated series: Alghaf, inspired by the Ghaf tree, a national symbol of the UAE; Calligraphy (Hurufiyya), where Arabic letters function as visual and spiritual forms; Impressionism, early depictions of UAE landscapes rendered with soft, atmospheric brushstrokes; Alhaa, a distinctive series of watercolour on paper works; and Abstract, which combines geometric elements—most notably Al Rais’s signature squares—with landscape compositions.
Additionally, the exhibition will feature rare works from the artist’s private collection and debut a selection of previously unseen new works, underscoring the artist’s continued creative vitality. Seamlessly blending Arabic and Islamic aesthetics with contemporary abstraction, ‘Al Nayed’ captures the cultural transformation of the UAE without nostalgia.

Spanning more than five decades, ‘Al Nayed’ traces the evolution of an artist whose work has played a central role in shaping the UAE’s modern visual identity.

Arte&Lusso had an exclusive conversation, in which Maria Zet Nova reflects on her artistic philosophy, the emotional responsibility of live painting, and the unseen discipline behind creating art in the most refined and intimate settings.

– Live events are unpredictable. How do you work with uncertainty, and do unexpected moments become part of the artwork itself?

– Experience has taught me how to anticipate the unexpected. I arrive fully autonomous — equipped with a complete mobile atelier, prepared for every technical scenario. My setup allows me to stay focused on creation.
Yet unpredictability of the event flow often becomes part of the magic. A spontaneous gesture, a shift of light, an unplanned emotional moment can influence the composition. These unscripted details bring authenticity and life into the artwork — they make each painting truly unrepeatable.
