Wallace Chan’s Vessels of Other Worlds at Long Museum (West Bund), Shanghai, is a large-scale sculptural exhibition exploring the continuous cycle of birth, growth and rebirth, and the themes of transformation, memory and spirituality. It centres on three monumental titanium vessels and is paired with a parallel exhibition at the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà that coincides with the Venice Biennale of Art. The visitor is taken on an immersive journey through passages and corridors that trace the development of Chan’s sculptures through three previous Venice Biennale projects: Titans, Totem and Transcendence. They lead to open spaces where the three colossal vessels are revealed, inspired by Olea Sancta, the sacred oils used in Catholic rituals of purification and divine blessing.
