Develop is heading to Liverpool for Develop: North

UK game development conference Develop will head to Liverpool in November for Develop: North.
The one-day event will take place on November 14, 2024, at The Spine in Liverpool. Registration will open in September, when more details will be announced.
Develop has become a mainstay on the UK game industry calendar and takes place in Brighton in July. The show attracted a record number of attendees this year, with 5225 people heading to the seaside earlier this month—an increase of 5 percent on last year.
Organizer Tandem Events said there was also a "sizable increase" in the number of exhibitors across an expanded expo floor.

Foretold Studios failing to pay wages, plunging some workers into debt

Tollan Universe developer Foretold Studios has failed to pay a number of employees for months of work, plunging some into debt.
Multiple former staffers have told Game Developer the studio has missed numerous wage payments, employed dubious hiring practices, and has suffered due to mismanagement.
Despite those issues, the studio is outwardly pushing ahead with development on Tollan Universe, an "adventure game ecosystem" comprising two titles in Tollan Worlds and Tollan Survivors, the first of which initially incorporated web3 elements.

Mad Crusader puts $30 million toward double-A games, reopens transmedia incubation program

Mad Crusader will spend the next two years investing $30 million in double-A games, the transmedia company revealed.
Spread across four investment rounds, the money will go specifically toward concepts made by the first 10 graduates from its World Builders incubation program. The funding will help those concepts grow into "commercial products with franchise potential."
In other words, if a developer thinks its project has what it takes to grow beyond games, as so many others have done recently, Mad Crusader wants to help get it off the ground.

Classic studio Argonaut Games revived as 'boutique publisher'

Nearly 20 years since its closure, Argonaut Games has returned.
The British studio is now a "boutique publisher" looking to release remasters of its previous works and make original titles for "current and retro platforms." First on the docket is a remaster for the well-known classic Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.
"I’m thrilled to see the Argonaut name back after twenty years away," wrote founder Jez San. "[We were] always about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming, and I’m excited to see how the relaunched Argonaut Games builds on that legacy."

Team17 wants to dip into the 'M&A market' less than a year after layoffs

UK publisher Team17 is pursuing mergers and acquisitions to accelerate revenue growth. In its latest investor presentation, the studio explained it has a "strong balance sheet" that can support M&A optionality.
The company intends to select deals with an "indie focus" and said those moves are part of its mid-term plan. It's an interesting tidbit considering Team17 has been through the wringer lately.
The company conducted a round of layoffs in October 2023 (Eurogamer reported that at least 50 people were made redundant) that appeared to largely impact the company's QA team.
