Ali Sadpara.

"Ali Sadpara - my last portrait taken in our tent right before the final summit push on K2.

‘K2 is King of Mountains’ he would constantly tell me. Ali had the deepest respect for the crown jewel of Pakistan’s Karakoram. Every time he spoke of his vast experience on 8000m peaks in winter, I listened intently and absorbed every word.

Pasang Kaji and I were only with Ali, John and Sajid for 3 weeks, but what was evident was the respect and love these men had for one another. There was no employer / employee relationship - they were a team. They were equal. They cared deeply for one another and respected each other tremendously.

Winter K2 was a common dream that belonged to Ali, John and Sajid. As John constantly put it: it’s Iceland working in partnership with Pakistan - to celebrate Pakistan.

Ali knew everyone at basecamp and was adored by so many.

As Sajid put it: ‘My father is like a Snow Leopard. He moves incredibly fast in the mountains.’ He commanded your respect for his incredible talent and won over your heart with his charm and beautiful soul.

Whether dancing at basecamp, joking around with John and the kitchen staff - his smile, charm, warm heart, sense of humor and one of a kind spirit will always be what defines this great man.

Ali is one of Pakistan’s greatest heroes and his pioneering accomplishments in the throne-room of the heavens will always be remembered."

CIAO CESARE

Per tutta la vita l’hanno incolpato di avere ridotto la montagna a un teatro, lui che veniva da una famiglia di attori, e di non aver preso abbastanza sul serio l’Etica inviolabile dell’alpinismo. Quando ha detto di avere salito il Cerro Torre l’hanno tacciato di spergiuro, e quando c’è tornato con il compressore è stato condannato per abuso tecnologico e recitazione. Cesare Maestri, morto oggi alla tenera età di 91 anni, era un uomo senza mezze misure, adorato e discusso, amato, invidiato e condannato. Come gli attori, appunto: i grandi attori della vita. A me piaceva così, perché era uno scalatore eccezionale ma parlava con tutti, anche con i “normali”, e si mostrava fragile e dubbioso in un ambiente pieno di superuomini. Mi è sempre stato simpatico, e io a lui, perché in fondo sapevamo tutti e due che scalare le montagne è solo una recita, nobile come ogni cosa inutile.

K2 winter was a beast of a challenge. I firmly believe that a feat of such caliber is never possible if you don’t have a purpose or if it is only aimed for your own self glory.

I have always known what my mind and body are capable off. To lay it out straight, on my previous evolutions I had been carrying oxygen from the higher camps, 8000m and above in some cases, but I was personally satisfied with my work efficiency up to 8000m. It was my choice and I had my own reasons and ethos.

It was a tough call this time inorder to make that decision whether to climb with or without supplementary oxygen (O2). Due to the weather conditions and time frame, I hadn’t acclimatised adequately. I was only able to sleep as high as Camp 2 (6,600m). Ideally climbers need to sleep OR at least touch Camp 4 before heading for a summit push. Lack of acclimatisation, developed frost bite from the first rotation and slowing down other team members, risking everyone’s safety, were the key uncertainties associated.

The safety of my team is and always have been my top priority above all. I have lead 20 successful expeditions so far and all my team members have returned home the exact way that they had left home i.e. without loosing any fingers or toes.

I took a calculated risk this time and I pressed on without supplementary O2. My self confidence, knowing my body’s strength, capability and my experience from climbing the 14 x 8000ers enabled me to keep up with the rest of the team members and yet lead.

JOB DONE ! K2 WINTER WITH NO SUPPLEMENTARY OXYGEN !

There are many cases, where climbers have claimed no O2 summits but followed our trail that we blazed and used the ropes and lines that we had fixed. Some of which are widely known within the inner climbing community. What is classified as fair means?
Personally, it had never been a major deal for me and it still isn’t. Coming from a United Kingdom’s special forces background, you have been and done all sorts but we don’t make a big fuss about everything. It is a personal choice. Nature and the mountains are for everyone. You make your own call ! 🙏🏼🙌🏼
