A local food tour of Roma is more fun when you go digging deliciousness with an archeologist! Yes that's right! is a bunch of em. I highly recommend Selene . She welcomed us at a local cafe where we started our day with Italian baked by Nonna (granny) who is 70 plus of age and bakes airy, buttery every day at 6 am here! They are so good that they melt in the mouth! think I had 40 of them !
In short strides that demanded no rush, we covered some interesting trivia about local food terms and moved to a Local Farmers Market where every piece of ingredient that cooks magic in an Italian house is available to buy. With no tourists to rub shoulders with! Only nonnas and their menacing shopping baskets, We glazed through the fresh stocks displayed by merchants. It was a world worth admiring with rose(mary) tainted glasses. Tasted and listened to description of different types of Italian cheeses and their ageing processes and methods. Pecorino, Parmesan, Grana, Buratta, Buffalo Mozzarella....I am happiest with pasteurised fat in my plate ! hehe ! Followed by tasting of Rosemary, Lemon Marmalade, Truffle disney land ..All of this in one day!
Out of the farmers market and into a pizza-by-the-slice shop. Here is where I discovered that my eyes are truly bigger than my stomach. Slabs of freshly baked bread (I still remember the smell) carrying with , , flowers, like a birthday party. Yeh we got VIP treatment like no one! Baked that train of pizza with the chefs!
A good way to discover Italian pastas is not necessarily at a restaurant but instead at a kitchen that supplies pasta to all the roman restaurants ! Ha! Pasta like there is no tomorrow!
Every visitor to Rome has a favourite Gelato shop .. and so does the Pope :) We followed him (kiddin) or somebody did ! Anyway we landed at the place that claims to be Pope's fav Gelato bar. I shall now pray that they agree to open a franchise with me in India .. So good itwas!
