Tracing Italian roots: mapping italy’s legacy in America

Picture walking through Washington, D.C., and discovering a mural, sculpture, or café that tells a piece of Italy’s story in America. That’s the spirit of Tracing Italian Roots – a new digital platform designed to map and celebrate the Italian legacy across the United States. The project, launched by the Italian Community Committee of Washington D.C., begins with the capital as a pilot city.

A First-Timer’s Guide to the Amalfi Coast

If you’ve ever dreamed of a taste of Italy dressed as a swirl of sea, stone, and sunlight, then the Amalfi Coast is for you. It’s a destination where elegance meets ancient rhythm, where dinner might mean hand-painted plates on a candlelit terrace, and mornings begin with bells echoing through tiled courtyards.

Honorary renaming of intersection kicks off Agatucci’s celebration of 100 years of business in Peoria

A well-known, family-operated Peoria bar and pizzeria is celebrating 100 years in business, complete with a special anniversary logo and an honorary street designation from the city. Friends, family and fans of Agatucci’s Restaurant gathered Wednesday for a kickoff celebration at the eatery that originally opened as a grocery store in 1926 and has become what Mayor Rita Ali called “one of Peoria’s most beloved institutions.”

An Italian Travel Expert’s Guide to Lazio, the Region Surrounding Rome

Whether you’re planning a day trip, a weekend escape, or passing through on your way to Tuscany or Umbria, the Italian region of Lazio offers a wealth of experiences that often get overshadowed by its main attraction, Rome. The broader area around the Eternal City is well worth exploring. As a travel advisor specializing in trips to Italy, here are a few of my favorite Lazian destinations that you won’t want to miss.

Filopanti and the birth of time zones

Quirico Filopanti (the pen name of Italian mathematician and patriot Giuseppe Barilli, 1812–1894) was one of the first thinkers to sketch a modern, global system of time. In 1858, while living in London in exile after the Roman Republic fell, he published a book titled Miranda!that proposed dividing the Earth into twenty-four longitudinal “days,” what we would now call time zones.

The Last 440: How Venice Makes a Gondolier

“Gondola, Gondola!” The familiar call rings through Venice’s tight waterways, hawked at passersby from figures donning red- or blue-striped shirts and straw hats. These gondoliers, and their sleek, seductive boats, have become icons (to say the least) of La Serenissima. But what does it take to perfect the art of passing another boat with barely a centimeter to spare?

Italy Revives Motor Tourism: A New Partnership to Boost Sustainable Travel in Hidden Italian Towns

Italy, a country renowned for its art, history, and lively culture, plans to increase the range of tourism it offers by concentrating on the small but expanding motor tourism market. A new strategy to improve the travel experience in the nation’s less-travelled areas has begun with a recent agreement signed in Rome.
