Roccasecca: the hidden village in Lazio to discover if you love philosophy

Nestled in the lush hills of the Lazio region, Roccasecca is a beautiful medieval village, one of the most interesting and lesser-known in Central Italy. Far from the crowds of Rome and just two hours away by car, this picturesque town offers a peaceful, authentic Italian experience where history, nature, and culture meet.

The 15 Absolute Best Italian Subs In The US

Hoagie. Grinder. Hero. Whatever part of the country you hail from, these slang terms translate to more or less the same thing, which is the Italian sub. Piled with cold cuts, cheeses, and brine-infused condiments on a crusty bread loaf, the mouthwatering sandwich has endured as the grab-and-go lunch through generations of American life.

The Heart of the Boot

The phrase “Made in Italy” conjures images of steaming bowls of pasta, enormous wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano, paper-thin slices of prosciutto and sleek Ferraris. Everyone knows what Italy is famous for, but far fewer realize that many of these icons come from a single region: Emilia-Romagna.

From beach to piazza, every day in Pizzo ends with gelato

On a rocky cliff above the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Calabria’s province of Vibo Valentia, we find the town of Pizzo. Small in population but rich in reputation, it is known across Italy as “the town of gelato.” Its fame, however, doesn’t come from the amount of gelato produced, but from a single, iconic creation: the Tartufo di Pizzo, a dense, round ball of hazelnut and chocolate gelato, filled with a molten chocolate heart dusted with cocoa powder.

Why Do Italian Restaurants Play Frank Sinatra's Music?

In addition to being a world-class entertainer, Frank Sinatra certainly had great taste for fine foods. Among the numerous restaurants Frank Sinatra loved across the U.S., a number of these establishments specialized in Italian fare. An only child of Italian immigrant parents, Francis Albert Sinatra was a proud Italian-American and always did his best to pay tribute to his heritage whenever he had the chance.

The Origin of Arancina: Palermo or Catania?

Few things in Sicily cause as much heated debate as this simple golden ball of deep-fried joy. In Palermo, it’s arancina—feminine, round, and proud. In Catania, it’s arancino—masculine, often cone-shaped, and just as fiercely defended. But beyond the name, there’s a history that’s as rich as the ragu inside.

Minneapolis nonprofit takes travelers across rural Italy: ‘Walk with your hearts’

On a brisk spring morning in Rimini, I stood in a hushed cathedral with 11 other hikers, waiting for a bishop’s blessing. Ahead lay days of strenuous trekking through Italy’s mountainous Emilia-Romagna region to the Sanctuary of La Verna, a Franciscan monastery in Tuscany. Together we would climb and descend for 75 miles on paths, some rugged and steep. So far, we had walked just three flat city blocks. Given the rigors ahead, pausing for celestial aid seemed wise.

Volunteers prep for upcoming Festa Italiana in New Kensington, PA

Karen Mitchell has a simple answer when asked what has kept New Kensington’s Festa Italiana going strong for 44 years. Food! “The food is good, and people enjoy it,” said Mitchell of New Kensington, who’s in her third year as the main coordinator for Mount St. Peter Church’s annual event. Festa Italiana is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, at the church, 100 Freeport Road.
