The Great James Senese left us today at 80. With loving memory for our dear friend and collaborator who blessed us with his soul and sound.

Son of a Neapolitan woman and an American soldier who landed in Italy in World War II, whom he only met 40 years later, his multicultural background deeply influenced his music. He grew up in the Miano district in northern Naples. James Senese, or Gaetano Senese, is a leading figure in the “Neapolitan sound,” blending jazz, funk, rock and Neapolitan tradition. After starting in the 1960s with Showmen alongside Mario Musella, he formed Napoli Centrale in the 1970s, and long collaborated with Pino Daniele, appearing on his early albums and forming a lasting friendship. His singing voice and his saxophone timbre or ‘honk’ were unique, as well as his fantastic raw energy on stage.

His latest album, “Chesta nun è ‘a Terra mia,” was released last May and one of his last testaments was; “What the music industry asks of me today isn’t of any interest to me at all,” he told Repubblica newspaper. “Half a century building myself up as an artist, and now I’m supposed to do what they demand? Not a chance.”

Sergio Corbucci's early work "I Ragazzi dei Parioli" (1960), before his Spaghetti Westerns debut, is the director's take on the ever-popular Italian Comedy genre.
Corbucci attempts a genre crossover, mixing comedy tropes with the visual langue of film noir and French new-wave gangster movies.

"I Ragazzi dei Parioli", a story of idle sons of families posing as film producers to flirt with girls, certainly hasn't aged well. In an interview with Noël Simsolo, Sergio Leone said: "In the final sequence, the hero had to go out to fight. The story was dramatic. The spectators were moved. They were waiting for the fatality of this finale. But now the character bursts into the street doing "Pop! Pan!" He uses his fingers instead of revolvers. The public did not appreciate this conclusion in the form of a joke. A disaster. Sergio came to see me. He was desperate. He wanted to become an assistant again. »

On the other hand, Piero Piccioni delivered a solid soundtrack characterised by beautiful atmospherical jazz music that perfectly works with the bitter character of this Italian comedy. Along the just under 20' soundscore are some great jazz gems to be rediscovered, like "Parioli Notturno" or the more experimental "Parioli Suspense".

At the beginning of the film “I Ragazzi dei Parioli”, we spotted Ennio Girolami dancing to the rhythm of Piero Piccioni’s re-arrangement of Xavier Cugat’s “Cha Cha Cha”.

The seminal album was released in 1995 by Columbia as “the new Latin American dance craze”. Cugat, on his own, is one of the emblematic artists of the Space-Age Bachelor Pad Sound of “Exotica”. By unearthing Piero’s music archive, we can see how popular the genre was in the 50’ in Europe and inspired him in much of his production.

On our recently released album, “Piero Piccioni in Orbit”, you can hear the influence of artists such as Arthur Lyman, Esquivel, Martin Denny and others. On “I Ragazzi dei Parioli”, Piccioni is experimenting with Cugat’s Latin Jazz sound.

Camille 3000 has just released “I Ragazzi dei Parioli” - another journey into the music of Piero Piccioni, scored for the homonymous film by Sergio Corbucci.

If “I Ragazzi dei Parioli” - a story of idle sons of families posing as film producers to flirt with girls- hasn’t aged well, Piero Piccioni delivered a solid soundtrack characterised by beautiful atmospheric jazz music.

The score alternates winds and brass instruments-dominated songs to ‘ballabili’ (ballads) such as “T’aspetterò” - with vocals by Bruno Martino - and “Bailando el Cha Cha Cha”.

For Guendalina, a 1957 romantic comedy, Piero Piccioni delivers a soundtrack that alternates cheerful and melancholy pieces. The jazz arrangements distinguished by flutes, piano, and vibraphone are juxtaposed with the sounds of lounge exotica typical of the period at the turn of the 50s and 60s. The album, compiled by Jason Piccioni, includes tracks such as 'Voyage' with the typical Piccioni's mark.

'Guendalina,' directed by A. Lattuada, who would also use Piccioni for 'Mafioso' in 1962, is the story of A teenage girl on vacation on the Italian Riviera during the summer with her wealthy parents. The comedy, perhaps thanks partly to Valerio Zurlini's s, script, is still relevant today in its criticism of the hypocrisy of the typical bourgeois couple who are only interested in the facade.

In "La Notte Brava", Mauro Bolognini, against Pasolini's advice, chose known rising Italian and French stars to perform in major roles instead of using unknowns as the screenwriter desired, ensuring the film's marketability outside Italy.

In the opening scene, Elsa Martinelli, Anna, is arguing with Antonella Lualdi, Supplizia, who's stolen the other s*x workers client. The hefty argument between the two goes on, standing against the arid urban scenario whilst Piero Piccioni's mambo sets the mood. Two small times crooked, Laurent Terzieff, Ruggeretto and Jean-Claude Brialy, Scintillone, recruit the women, without them knowing, as a cover-up to smuggle drugs. It's a dog-eat-dog world to which Piccioni adds his own jazz moody quality soundtrack.
