A probiotic cream against the side effects of cancer therapies? Now it's a reality.
A new clinical trial launched in June 2025 is testing ATR-04, a revolutionary topical therapy based on a lab-engineered “good” skin bacterium (Staphylococcus epidermidis).To combat the annoying rashes caused by cancer drugs such as EGFR receptor inhibitors, which are used to treat lung and colon cancers.
These side effects are not only painful, but often force patients to stop treatment.
🔬 How does it work?
ATR-04 is a skin probiotic modified to be safe (it does not resist antibiotics or multiply permanently) and to restore the balance of the skin microbiome, reducing inflammation and improving tolerance to treatment.
🧪 The study, supported by the FDA's Fast Track Designation, could pave the way for a new way of doing medicine: not only treating cancer, but also helping people cope better with treatment.

🧠 Is the human brain not sterile? A discovery that could change everything.

For decades we believed that the brain was a completely isolated environment, protected by the blood-brain barrier and devoid of microbial life.
But a new study, published in Nature Communications in May 2025, challenges this dogma.
