Edita dallo Studio Editoriale Milanese, ha cadenza mensile ed è diretta da Guido Marangoni. All’inizio del 1933, Giuseppe Pagano, che già collabora alla rivista con Edoardo Persico, ne assume la direzione, modificando il titolo in «Casabella». Il cambio di direzione coincide con l’acquisto della testata da parte dell’Editoriale Domus. Nel 1935, a Pagano si affianca come condirettore Persico. Nel 1938, al titolo «Casabella» viene aggiunta la parola «Costruzioni». Nel 1940, i termini vengono invertiti e il titolo diventa «Costruzioni-Casabella». Nel dicembre del 1943 la rivista è sospesa dal Ministero della Cultura Popolare. Dopo due anni, l’editore Gianni Mazzocchi la riorganizza affidandone la direzione a Franco Albini e a Giancarlo Palanti. Nel 1946 appaiono così tre numeri di «Costruzioni», tra i quali il numero monografico dedicato a Giuseppe Pagano. Segue un nuovo periodo di sospensione dal 1947 al 1953. Nel gennaio 1954 esce «Casabella-Continuità», diretta da Ernesto Nathan Rogers fino al gennaio 1965. A partire dall’agosto 1965, e fino al maggio 1970, la direzione viene affidata a Gian Antonio Bernasconi e la rivista torna a chiamarsi soltanto «Casabella». Dopo Bernasconi è la volta di Alessandro Mendini fino a marzo 1976, sostituito, da aprile a dicembre dello stesso anno, da Bruno Alfieri. Dal gennaio 1977 la rivista viene pubblicata dal Gruppo Editoriale Electa, con la direzione di Tomás Maldonado fino al dicembre 1981. La direzione passa a Vittorio Gregotti nel marzo 1982. Dal marzo 1996 Gregotti viene sostituito dall’attuale direttore, Francesco Dal Co. Nel frattempo, la casa editrice Mondadori ha assorbito il Gruppo Editoriale Electa e, a partire dall’aprile 2002, la rivista è pubblicata da Arnoldo Mondadori Editore.
