The Capri family that modelled the same stuccoes twice, ninety years apart.

In 1905 a French baron, Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen, built Villa Lysis on Capri’s Monte Tiberio. Everything inside it was made by Italian hands.

The house stands 200 metres above the Bay of Marina Grande, minutes from the ruins of Villa Jovis, the palace Emperor Tiberius built here in the first century.

Ionic columns at the entrance, a marble staircase under wrought iron, a salon lined with blue majolica and white ceramic facing the Gulf. The bronzes for the garden were cast by the Neapolitan sculptor Francesco Jerace.

The continuity is the point. When the villa was restored in the 1990s, the stucco work went to Antonio Senesi of Capri, grandson of the Senesi who had modelled the originals.

Foreigners keep coming to Capri to build their idea of beauty. Italy is what builds it.

On 7 July 2016, Fendi staged the first fashion show ever held on the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The house was marking its 90th year, founded in the same city in 1925.

A transparent plexiglass runway was laid across the basin, just below the surface, so the 46 looks of the “Legends and Fairy Tales” collection appeared to move on the water. The result is one stage made of Baroque sculpture, evening light and hand-painted fur.

The gesture was earned, not borrowed. Fendi had paid 2.2 million euros for the fountain’s 17-month restoration, completed only months earlier.

Ten years on, it remains the clearest example of an Italian house giving back to the city that made it.
