The artists’ attention to the context that hosts them and the idea of an inextricable connection between local and global events are also at the basis of the work created in collaboration with Giulio Polita and the AiR Trieste residency program. Calendario triestino/The Many Faces of the Moon (2024) connects significant events in the city’s history – including the seizure of Sailing Yacht A – with images of the moon corresponding to the dates in question, taken from the NASA website. While Trieste is the place where the first lunar atlas was created by the Bavarian astrophysicist Johann Nepomuk Krieger, who had established his observatory in the city at the end of the nineteenth century, the moon has historically been the object of geopolitical tensions. In the 1970s, it was the contested destination in the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, while today it is the object of attention of China, intent on expanding its Skynet system into a lunar surveillance network by installing cameras permanently pointed at Earth.

Embracing the concept of aesthetics in the dual sense of perception and sense-making, Klara Källström & Thobias Fäldt and Giovanna Repetto bring into play conscious and inventive practices to mobilize images as tools for knowing the world. In their works, as in the exhibition or in the world itself, this knowledge can only emerge in a relational way.

A Beach 2013 Revisited (2023)
On view 6-21 April

In A Beach (2013) a series of photographs taken along the beach in the city of Jaffa/Tel Aviv, Israel/Palestine, are presented with a photograph from the same place by French photographer Félix Bonfils in 1880. The buildings that are visible in Bonfils’s photograph are now demolished to make way for a modern boardwalk. The construction is a process of gentrification by which Jaffa transforms into Tel Aviv and Palestine becomes Israel. The only signs left of the previous architecture are pieces of mosaic from floor tiles found on the beach in Jaffa, accompanied by writer Johannes Wahlström’s childhood memories.

In 2015, the artists extended the work into an enquiry on how a gallery context affects cultural heritage by giving it monetary value. When it was displayed at antique dealers in Stockholm and Paris, the floor tiles from A Beach were juxtaposed with exquisite objets d’art. They were accompanied by precise miniature replicas of the tiles, common for priceless artefacts.

A Beach, having settled into an ordinary weekend leisure spot for local Israelis, now repeats itself just a helicopter ride south of Jaffa.

Titled "Victory over the Victory" this exhibition strives to touch upon some of the current and historical events, related to questions of war, loss, sorrow and memory. The participants' collective focus revolves around the theme of communication in times of conflict, as well as the notion of a victory. Driven by artists' direct and indirect experiences and active socio-political stance, several questions are put to the fore: is it possible to win a war, what defines a victory and who becomes a winner?

For us who live in Sweden and follow various wars through the media narration or friends' testimonies and personal stories, it is important to listen and take a chance to reflect together on our own experiences and values. Therefore we have invited 23 international and Swedish artists to show their works at Köttinspektionen. We see this exhibition as a possibility to align with participants' diverse artistic practices and experiences by voicing their opinions.

Opening April 6, 12:00-17:00.
Speach at 14:00.

*Shortlisted for the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards Photography Catalog of the Year*

In their practice, Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt make extensive use of historical reference and historical juxtaposition to make sense of the present, including the status of photography. They invite us to be critical of dominant narratives about the world today, while examining how photography is used in the creation of these narratives. A guiding principle in their oeuvre are the gaps between what is visible and what is told. By exploring the limitations, challenges, and possibilities of photography, the artists aim to unfold and expose overlooked parts of official history as well as contemporary narratives. This is where nuances, critical perspectives, and questions reside. These are the stories that are uncomfortable and difficult. They would most likely have no natural platform in the public arena if they did not appear in Källström-Fäldt’s projects.

The artists’ exhaustive body of work on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks is perhaps the most striking example of their commitment to exploring narratives that do not fit a certain mould. The ongoing project examines the media image of Assange following his exposure of US war crimes. Looking into the gaps of the Assange story, the artists shed light on anti-democratic forces and attacks on press freedom. Building on the insights of their work, Duncan Forbes, Head of Photography at Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has written an essay investigating the ways in which Källström-Fäldt approach questions of historical consciousness and historical process in their work. -Publisher

Opening Reception January 20 at Printed Matter, NY for the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards Shortlist.

This year, Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards received 961 books from sixty-one countries. On September 20–22, 2023, the shortlist jury met in New York for three concentrated days of review and deliberation by an international team: Deirdre Donohue, assistant director of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints, and Photographs, the New York Public Library; Alex Lin, creative director and owner, Studio Lin; Lesley A. Martin, editor at large, Aperture; Renée Mussai, artistic director, the Walther Collection; and Anna Planas, artistic director, Paris Photo.

In addition to discussions around the individual entries, this year’s shortlist jury took time to discuss the existential: what does it mean to distill down such an enormous number of books, in search of “the best.” As shortlist jury member Deirdre Donohue stated, “I think about how many people are going to care about this in the future; I think about them being in libraries—and that makes me wonder, will I care about this if I pick it up again in five years; what future potential does this have in the world.” Fellow jury member Renée Mussai, noted, “There are so many urgent conversations and so many themes that are critical to our times; I found myself looking for that—something potent and compelling.” The resulting shortlist represents the possibilities of book making across a broad spectrum of resources, intentions, and storytelling strategies.
