DOING TIME
Collateral Event

Tehching Hsieh

In Manhattan’s downtown art scene in the late 1970s and early 80s, a young Taiwanese artist Tehching Hsieh made an exceptional series of artworks. Working outside the art world’s sanctioned spaces and economies Hsieh embarked on five separate yearlong performances. In each, he made a strict rule that governed his behaviour for the entire year. The performances were unprecedented in terms of their use of physical difficulty over extreme durations and in their absolute conception of art as a living process.

Doing Time exhibits two of Hsieh’s One Year Performances together for the first time, assembling his accumulated records and artefacts into detailed installations. In One Year Performance 1980-1981, Hsieh subjected himself to the dizzying discipline of clocking on to a worker’s time clock on the hour, every hour, for a whole year. In One Year Performance 1981-1982, Hsieh inhabited a further sustained deprivation: he remained outside for a year without taking any shelter. Each work convenes different methods of documentation, challenging what it might mean to archive a life. Together these monumental performances of subjection mount an intense and affective discourse on human existence, its relation to systems of control, to time and to nature. Hsieh’s fugitive presence – traced throughout – speaks both of the abject conditions and ingenuity of survival for those who have nothing. During the course of his One Year Performances Hsieh was an illegal immigrant.

A person of profound actions and succinct words, Hsieh explains the philosophy behind his art making: “Life is a life sentence. Life is passing time. Life is freethinking.”

Zulu kids Namsa Leuba
In the series “Zulu kids” Namsa was inspired by anti-apartheid movements and by the impact of these movements on the contemporary South African society. In this series Namsa wants to show the re-appropriation of a cultural and social identity of black people after the years of apartheid. Zulu kids' gestures (fit, or holding a rot) and symbolic actions (burning the passport) are the expression of this new generation’s will to build their future and find their place in a contradictory society like the one of South Africa, where the Western world and the African world are trying to coexist. The idea of “identity” is transversal in Namsa's work; it is the natural reflection of her personal history: she grew up with two different cultures, trying to explore common grounds between them. “In this series I have tried to establish a dialogue between my African and Swiss origins,” Namsa explains.

Sean Mundy is a fine art and portrait photographer from Montreal, Canada, creating surreal, yet impassioned images that convey a palette of emotions. Led by sentiment, his work offers personal glimpses into moments of pain, confusion and self-doubt. Working through questions of identity, Sean constructs austere, yet neutral and distant scenes of palpable tension and uncertainty. With a subtle, minimal approach he aims to disrupt, select from, and delete classical narrative formula to form scenarios that are reliant on subjective associations. IN SOLASTALGIA Bea Fremderman imagines a world after all is lost. Hoodies and socks disappear beneath chia sprouts, fruits are barely held together by sutures, and bowls are made of dryer lint, making you wonder: if every object around you was a reminder of an impending ecological disaster, would you act differently towards the earth?

Thom Pierce is a British photographer, born in 1978, now living in Cape Town, South Africa. His work explores the lines between art, documentary and portrait photography to engage with issues of cultural, social and historical significance.

He is a recipient of the 2016 Piclet prize for contemporary African photography and the 2016 PDN storytellers award. His work has been published widely in newspapers, magazines and books, and has featured heavily as part of several human rights campaigns. A collection of his work can be found in the permanent collection of the South African National Gallery.

Semonkong, or “Place of Smoke”, sits high in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, southern Africa. Most of the region’s villages are inaccessible by car and locals rely on horsepower to navigate the winding, precarious trails between settlements.

In May this year, Thom Pierce joined horsemen, herders and traders to produce a striking series of portraits detailing some of the world’s most picturesque commutes.

"The Horsemen of Semonkong series came about as a consequence of another project, almost accidentally," says Pierce, 37. "I was in Lesotho shooting another series but couldn’t help but notice the beauty of the landscape."
