Learning from “Hōjōki”: Tiny Architecture Reweaves Life

Inspired by the 13th-century essay Hōjōki, the exhibition explores how a tiny nine-square-metre hut can inspire new ways of thinking about contemporary life and architecture. Architects, designers and artists reinterpret the hut through their own materials and ideas.

The museum is itself an architectural highlight. Designed by Tadao Ando, most of the building lies underground, while its distinctive folded-steel roof was inspired by Issey Miyake’s “A Piece of Cloth” concept.

Ron Mueck
📍 Mori Art Museum, Tokyo

A powerful and highly recommended exhibition by Ron Mueck, one of the leading figures in contemporary figurative sculpture. Eleven works spanning more than two decades explore the human body, time, and existence through astonishingly lifelike figures and dramatic shifts in scale.

At its center is Mass, a monumental installation comprising 100 individually sculpted human skulls. The exhibition also includes early and recent works, alongside films and photographs documenting Mueck’s meticulous studio practice.

On view through September 23, 2026, at the Mori Art Museum, on the 53rd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower.

Yitzhak stages part of the collection’s story inside an illusory space of her own invention, deconstructivist in essence. It echoes the disorienting zigzag that Daniel Libeskind devised for the Jewish Museum Berlin, which opened in 2001.

In ‘The Collector’, a portrait statue created by the collector is toppled from its pedestal and dragged off toward some unknown destination, an image that recalls the barge sequence in Theo Angelopoulos’s ‘Ulysses’ Gaze’ (1995), where a statue of Lenin is borne along the Danube. Each reference marks a crossroads in geopolitical history, where the established order is destabilized and invites a new reading.

In Yitzhak’s animated works, architecture is not merely the space in which the story unfolds. It is the story.

📍 Lorna Simpson: ‘Third Person’, Punta della Dogana, Venice

‘Lorna Simpson. Third Person’ presents a major overview of the American artist’s work, bringing together painting, collage, sculpture, film, and installation. Curated by Emma Lavigne, the exhibition explores memory, identity, representation, and the construction of images.

Sound also becomes part of the experience: obsidian bowls placed throughout the central exhibition space resonate with haunting tones, creating a sensory dialogue with Simpson’s paintings and the architecture of Punta della Dogana.

Bringing together around fifty works, including new pieces created specifically for Venice, ‘Third Person’ is Simpson’s most significant presentation in Europe in more than a decade.
