🪨 Room 3: Placing

In the third space a circular drystone structure has been assembled to create a form of communality that fulfills one of architecture’s basic roles: to create relationships where none existed before. Through this process created by artisans Argyris Panayiotou and Panayiotis Panayiotou in real time within the pavilion with Cortemilia sandstone, the collective effort of making the structure was revealed. Surrounding the exhibition is the fragmented ambient soundscape of artist Elena Savvidou who creates a sense of suspended timelessness by weaving digital compositions with field recordings. The spatiality of the monolithic structure is enhanced and transformed into its surfaces by the lighting hues of Demetris Shammas who has composed shifting subtle rhythms of warm to cool hues of the sun’s natural cycle.

🪨 Room 2: Sorting
The second space reflects on how hand and eye coordination begin to differentiate the randomness of different stones, organising them into an act of sorting into eight different sizes and typologies before they are assembled into a structure. Sorted stones are broken down into modular typologies which display craft singularly into a sophistication of solids but also voids, which then becomes identified, once it can be ‘read’ in the assembled structures.

An installation by incorporates three short films co-directed with Andreas Anastasiades, with shots by Keti Papadema and sound support by Alexandra Astreou-Karides, which are ‘suspended’ between the stones. Narratives based on semi-fictional scripts blend storytelling and artistic research through montage, beyond descriptive material functionality. The film installation also reveals real-time dynamic processes of gathering, sorting and assembly which are concealed or even dismissed within the monumentality of completed drystone structures. Intricacies of the process are shared by craftsmen and women of Salamiou in Cyprus, a terraced community still practicing the intangible heritage of drystone.

Stools made from wild Cerula Communalis (Anathrika in Greek-Cypriot, Gavcar in Turkish-Cypriot) crafted by Angelos Papatheocharous and , are provided for visitors. A decorated Birdnest, modeled by and made by high school children highlights the more-than-human environment that drystone landscape generates.

🪨 Room 1: Gathering

The first space recalls natural accumulations during gathering stones, assembled collectively, while fields are cleared for cultivation in the process. Stones introduce themselves and their materiality discretely as they become recognised through typologies that find their place, gradually becoming apparent in sequences that follow. Drystone farming landscapes carry value beyond their technical functionality. They are imbued with poetry where the geological, the natural world and human imagination converge (Emmerick, 2016).
The stones placed in the window have been assembled to recall a curse, or an anathematisma. This borrows from traditional rural practices of both spatial and moral historic statements against injustice. Blocking a space with stones, or creating a monumental pile expresses a form of communal cursing or banishment, demonstrating visually against collective injustice inflicted upon a community. This form of drystone assemblage was a way of monumentalising people’s resistance through the lasting materiality of piled stones.

Σαλαμιού, Κύπρος, (34°51'07.5"N 32°39'42.7"E), ένα χωρκό γεμάτο ξερολιθκιές, περικλείεται που θκυό ποτάμους - μοιάζει νησί μες σε νησί.

Μουρμουρητό που πέτρες ακούεται στο βάθος.

Ανιχνεύοντας τους ρυθμούς της τεχνικής δόμησης ξερολιθιών, η έκθεση προτείνει μια λειτουργική αλυσίδα: συλλογής, ταξινόμησης και τοποθέτησης. Η αλυσίδα αυτή, η οποία καθορίζεται από τα σώματα εν κινήσει, κυρίως από τα χέρια, δημιουργεί σημείο συνάντησης μεταξύ της οικολογίας της γης και των «κοινών» («commons») που την κατοικούν. Αντηχώντας αυτή τη συλλογική διαδικασία, το περίπτερο συγκροτείται από αρχιτεκτόνισσες/ αρχιτέκτονες, τεχνίτριες/τες της ξερολιθιάς, επιμελήτριες/τές, καλλιτέχνιδες/νες, μαζί με τη συμμετοχή του κοινού.

Σιέρκα συνάουν πέτρες σε στοίβες.

Ένα σιέρι σηκώνει μιαν πέτρα στο’φτίν, [ακαταλαβίστικα].

Ακολουθώντας τις διαλεκτικές ανησυχίες της γης, οι πέτρες μετατρέπονται σε φορείς που μας παροτρύνουν να εστιάσουμε σε αυτό που «κάνουν» ή «λένε», αντί σε αυτό που «είναι». Οι πέτρες, ενσωματωμένες μέσα στις κοινότητές τους, φέρουν ζωτικές σχέσεις που συντηρούν τα διατροφικά τοπία, ενώ παράλληλα κουβαλούν συλλογικές αφηγήσεις χαραγμένες στη γη. Αυτοί οι συσχετισμοί διερευνώνται μέσα από μια σειρά επιτόπιων εγκαταστάσεων που θα παρουσιαστούν ως σειρές στατικών, ζωντανών και ηχητικών ενεργοποιήσεων, τόσο στη Βενετία όσο και στην Κύπρο.

Ψίθυροι σμίουν με τον ήχο των σιερκών τζιαι των ποθκιών που ταράσσουν.

Η σχεδόν 10.000 ετών «Εύφορη Ημισέληνος» της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, η οποία εκτείνεται από την Περσία, τη Μεσοποταμία και το Λεβάντε/Εγγύς Ανατολή, καλλιέργησε τοπία παραγωγής τροφίμων από διασυνδεδεμένες κοινότητες. Η Κύπρος μοιράζεται αυτή τη γεωγραφία που καθορίζει την ιστορία στη μακρά διάρκεια της. Στη σημερινή εποχή (Capitalocene), η περιοχή γίνεται μάρτυρας όχι μόνο των μεταβιομηχανικών μετασχηματισμών που κατακερματίζουν κοινότητες και τη γη μέσω συστημάτων εκμετάλλευσης, αλλά και της διάρρηξης αυτών των σχέσεων από την αποικιακή, γενοκτονική και οικοκτονική βία που εκτοπίζει ανθρώπους και στρατιωτικοποιεί οικολογίες. Μέσα σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, οι πρακτικές της ξερολιθιάς αντιτάσσονται στα συστήματα απαλλοτρίωσης και οικολογικής υποβάθμισης, υπερασπιζόντας, αντίθετα, ένα σύστημα αξιών ριζωμένων στη συλλογική φροντίδα και τη δίκαιη πρόσβαση στη γη.

(Στις πέτρες) Εδώκαμεν σας την αναπνοή μας τζαι εψιθυρίσετε την πίσω στο χώμα*.

La Biennale di Venezia 2025 - Cyprus Representation in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition - Biennale Architettura 2025 (10 May – 23 November 2025)

Salamiou, Cyprus, (34°51'07.5"N 32°39'42.7"E), a terraced community enclosed by two rivers, resembling an island within an island.

A chatter of stones is heard.

Tracing the rhythms of drystone building practices, the exhibition proposes an operational chain of gathering, sorting and placing. Determined by the movement bodies at work, primarily the hands, this chain establishes an intersection between ecology of the land and the commons of those inhabiting it. Echoing this shared labour, the pavilion is collectively put together by architects, drystone artisans, curators, artists and invited public participation.

Groups of hands gather stones into piles.

A hand lifts a stone to an ear, [inaudible].

Tending to the dialectal concerns of the land, stones are reconfigured as carriers of utility, shifting the focus from what they "are" to what they "do" or “say”. The stones, embedded in their communities, carry relations of life-sustaining foodscapes, holding shared histories traced upon the land. These links are explored through a succession of in-situ assemblages presented as a series of static, performative and sonic activations, in both Venice and Cyprus.

Whispers merge with the sound of moving hands and feet.

The eastern Mediterranean’s almost 10,000-year-old ‘Fertile Crescent’, arching from Persia, across Mesopotamia over the Levant, cultivated terraced foodscapes by interconnected communities. Cyprus shares this geography that determines history in the long duration. In the current Capitalocene, this region is witnessing not only late-industrial transformations that fracture communities and land through systems of value extraction, but also the disruption of these relations by colonial, genocidal and ecocidal violence that displaces people and militarises ecologies. Within this context, drystone practices preserve a way of opposing systems of dispossession and ecological degradation, defending instead a system of value rooted in collective care and fair access to the land.

On November 24th, from 22:00 until 00:00, the Cyprus Pavilion concludes its time in Venice with Last Wave: A Listening Vigil.

Accompanied by the songs of ghost whales, the last invigilators of the pavilion will commence the work of deinstalling, while holding space and time for reflection and remembrance.
