💡 Italian Cuisine and UNESCO: Meaning, Misunderstandings, and New Opportunities for Italian Wine

Italy’s shiny new UNESCO title for its entire national cuisine is a proud cultural victory, but it also sparked a collective “wait, didn’t France or Japan get this already?” moment.

The confusion is understandable.

Other countries had single traditions recognised, while Italy went for the full menu and became the first to see its whole culinary identity crowned by UNESCO.

Beyond the headlines and the puzzled tweets, this win offers a delicious side effect. As you know we are incredibly wine-centric so..

When the world gets excited about Italian food culture, curiosity about Italian wine follows right behind it. The UNESCO badge becomes a built-in promotional tool, giving Italy even more storytelling power to showcase its vineyards, varieties, and regional charm.

In short, Italy just gave its food and wine a global spotlight, and everyone else is still checking the rules to see how it happened.

Since 1956 the Cordero family (Enrico the father, Giampiero the son and Elide the mother) has nurtured a place in Priocca shaped by the care of each generation.

Today Elide Mollo, leads the kitchen with her unmistakable touch. Today’s recipe is one of their signature dishes “agnolotti di coniglio con fonduta filante”, a step into the heart of contemporary Piedmontese tradition.

Forgot that today, Monday, was the Immacolata holiday in Italy, which meant the offices were closed and both Marilisa and I, being workaholics, suddenly had no idea what to do with ourselves. So we opted for a spontaneous day trip to Lessinia, just an hour from Verona.

Likeminded wine people tend to get restless on holidays, just saying.

We went to see il Ponte di Veja, the largest natural arch in Europe, then aimed for Rifugio Castelberto for a table for two. We never made it because we completely underestimated the walk from the nearest car park, about 8 km.

We did, however, make it to Malga Lessinia, where we enjoyed homemade gnocchi with a generous dose of butter and Monte Veronese cheese. Pure joy.

Connectivity was a bit of a challenge, especially considering I had originally scheduled a couple of conference calls…

A quick stop at Vie di Romans, one of this year’s OperaWine “Classic” category turned into a full-blown Friuli adventure.

Just like many producers from the region, the labels are numerous and each tells a story of place, precision, and personality.

It is often cited in Italian media as a true David and Goliath wine saga: Gallo 🇺🇸 vs Gallo 🇮🇹.
And yes, we are talking about this Gallo family.

The name Vie di Romans comes from the old Roman road running between Aquileia and Cividale, right where the vineyards lie. A reminder that wine history here goes way back.

• Scott Galloway says remote work is quietly reshaping an entire generation and not in a good way.

To him, the office isn’t just a workplace.
It’s a built-in ecosystem for career growth, social skills, network building, and real human connection.

He points out that “one in three relationships begin at work,” and without that environment, young people lose the structure, mentorship, and social scaffolding that fuel professional development.

Galloway also argues that the rise of the anti-alcohol movement has removed another traditional space for bonding, a place where young adults once built confidence, relationships, and community.

Put together, these shifts are shaping a generation with weaker networks, fewer deep connections, and reduced emotional resilience, all at a time when strong relationships matter more than ever in both life and business.

Promoting a lesser known wine region is never easy, and Calabria is no exception.

This was only my second time here, and for many wine folks the past three days were their very first.

Yet the mission is clear. More awareness, more B2C events like Vinitaly and the City in Sibari, and many more wine professionals visiting the territory.

Cirò has now reached DOCG status which opens new doors for native grapes like Gaglioppo. The Calabrians know the road is steep, but enthusiasm and determination are not in short supply.

Sometimes you wonder if broadcasting a daily show is worth it. Sometimes, as they say in Italian, “chi te lo fa fare?” 🤷🏻‍♀️

Then we remember that this is our labour of love. We drop a pod a day, yes even on weekends, and sometimes ten pods a week. Call us crazy, but we are truly dedicated.

If you enjoy what we do, we would really appreciate it if you spread the love as we continue to cin cin with Italian wine people. 🥂🇮🇹

Is there a trend of influencers turning into de-influencers⁉️

Short answer: yes, and it is growing, especially among younger audiences. But it is not about rejecting all influencers. Perhaps it is more about rejecting inauthenticity, manufactured hype, and anything that feels staged or too commercially manipulative.

Are Gen Z and late Millennials are exhausted by sponsored content that hides the commercial deal? It seems like every time a scandal breaks, like the recent Ferragni case, trust drops again. Influencers who built personal brands on lifestyle aspiration now face suspicion if their content feels too polished or too transactional.

How does this trend translate into the 🍷 world and wine people? Thoughts?

The cost of keeping a Michelin star is no joke.

You start to wonder how sustainable it really is when you think about the constant menu updates, the number of people needed to run a single service, and the rising costs of keeping a restaurant alive today.

How important is it to hold on to that star, one might ask. And it is still incredible to remember that Michelin is actually a tyre company and that the whole guide began simply as a way to get people to drive more.

Here’s Le Cattedrali, one of Cannavacciuolo’s kingdoms, where Barbera d’Asti was the true wine star of the menu pairing.

Behind the scenes, everything is choreographed to perfection in an unbelievably small kitchen packed with people moving like clockwork.

A reminder that behind every Michelin star there is beauty, pressure, precision, and a whole world of work most diners never see.
