We spent an unforgettable (and mildly self-indulgent) afternoon tasting the “Glorious 5” with Count Francesco Marone Cinzano and his son Santiago.

5 vintages that map half a century of Montalcino and the family drama behind Col d’Orcia: 1975 • 1985 • 1995 • 2005 • 2015. Yes, all ending in 5, because apparently Brunello likes a tidy pattern as much as we do.

Highlights & slightly scandalous notes:
• 1975 the year Francesco met his wife and apparently learned how to make history taste delicious. After 50 years it still refuses to act its age: clean, precise and sneakily youthful.

• 2005 the prodigal return: the family moved back from South America and started plotting the organic takeover that would make Col d’Orcia one of Tuscany’s most talked about sustainable estates.

Practical truth: Col d’Orcia’s cellar is more of a library than a wine fridge, likely one of the largest in Montalcino. Tasting from those bottles feels less like drinking and more like time traveling with good manners and better tannins.

Today we were busy recording a very special episode of the Italian Wine Podcast from Brooklyn, London, Chicago, California, Manhattan, Texas, Connecticut and of course from Verona!

We’ve just reached 2,500 episodes, and if you’ve been with us for a while, you already know we’ve never been about perfection.

Sometimes our guests aren’t native speakers, sometimes the Wi-Fi drops, and sometimes the cellar walls eat the signal. But that’s kind of the point.

Italian Wine Podcast has always been about real conversations and quite frankly unpolished, honest, human.

Because imperfection, in its own way, beautiful chaos that got us here.
