Cocoa producer price raised to GH₵3,100

President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced an increase in the cocoa producer price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per 64kg bag, representing a slight rise of 0.03% from the previous rate set in September for the 2024/2025 crop season.

The adjustment, which translates to GH₵49,600 per tonne, is intended to align cocoa prices with current market conditions and provide additional support to Ghanaian cocoa farmers.

Speaking at the National Farmers’ Day awards ceremony in Accra on Friday, November 8, President Akufo-Addo stated that the increase followed recommendations from the Producer Price Review Committee.

He expressed confidence that the new price would help stabilize farmers’ incomes, especially given the various economic challenges farmers are currently facing.

“I am pleased to announce, on the advice of the Producer Price Review Committee, an increase in the producer price of cocoa from GH₵48,000 to GH₵49,600 per tonne, raising the price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per bag,” Akufo-Addo said, reiterating his commitment to the welfare of farmers.

He noted that the directive to review prices periodically is a step towards enhancing income security for cocoa farmers.

Fame is tough, so I disappear when it gets overwhelming – Ayra Starr

Nigerian songstress Ayra Starr recently shared her experiences navigating fame and the pressures of the music industry in an intimate conversation with American singer and actress Coco Jones.

In a chat produced by Rolling Stone, the two stars discussed the realities of being women in the limelight, shedding light on the often unseen challenges that come with their careers.

Reflecting on her journey, Ayra Starr opened up about the relentless demands of her work. “I feel like it’s always a lot,” she admitted. “People only see about 1%, but for an artist, it takes a village. It takes so much to get things done right.”

She described the toll her hectic schedule takes, especially after a whirlwind year of performing. “I did so many shows last year… sometimes I disappear when it gets overwhelming,” she said, acknowledging her need to retreat and recharge.

Starr explained that despite her rising fame, she still lives with her family, which keeps her grounded. “When I go back home, I’m still living with my family. My brothers might be making noise and playing video games, so the house is still very much full,” she noted, adding that being close to her loved ones helps her cope with the pressures of fame.

Positions on presidential ballot will be maintained – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that it will maintain the original ballot order for the 2024 presidential election, following the recent disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) candidate.

The announcement, made by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, November 12, signifies a key step in finalizing preparations for the upcoming election.

Jean Mensa noted that the EC is committed to a smooth, timely process and that the disqualification of the GFP candidate does not necessitate any changes to the ballot structure.

Addressing party representatives, Jean Mensa shared that the printing of presidential ballots is already 90 percent complete, emphasizing the Commission’s dedication to meeting all deadlines.

She highlighted that the EC’s preparations are progressing on schedule, ensuring that election materials will be ready well before voting day.

“This morning, we are here to inform you of the Commission’s decision to maintain the presidential ballot as it is. As you may be aware since you have representatives in the printing houses, we are almost 90 percent complete with the printing of presidential ballots.”

Philip Appiah Kubi was nominated as a replacement for Akua Donkor, the party’s initial presidential candidate and founder, who tragically passed away on Monday, October 28.

For the EC, maintaining the current ballot arrangement avoids disruption and minimises the risk of logistical issues.

EC disqualifies GFP’s new flagbearer over illegalities

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, after uncovering errors and illegalities on his nomination form.

This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa at a press conference held on Tuesday, November 12.

Despite allowing the party to correct these discrepancies, Jean Mensa stated that certain irregularities could not be overlooked, leading to the EC’s decision to disqualify Kubi from contesting in the upcoming election.

The GFP initially faced a major setback following the death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor.

Her unexpected death on October 15 left the party scrambling to find a replacement for the December 2024 presidential election. In response, the EC granted the GFP a 10-day window to submit a new flagbearer nomination, which led to Kubi’s appointment.

However, upon review, the EC identified several issues with Kubi’s documentation that went beyond simple clerical errors.

EC Chair Jean Mensa explained that while the party corrected some of the identified errors, other elements were deemed “illegitimate” and could not be accepted under the electoral laws.

Jean Mensa emphasized that the EC’s mandate to uphold the integrity of the electoral process prevents the acceptance of any irregularities, regardless of the party’s attempts to rectify them.

Gold, prices, and jobs: What's at stake in Ghana's elections?

Ghana is due to get a new president after December’s election. The current vice-president, Mahamudu Bawumia, and a former head of state, John Mahama, are the two leading candidates in contention to win the poll.

Nana Akufo-Addo, first elected in 2016, is coming to the end of his second and final four-year term.

When is the general election?
On Saturday 7 December, the nearly 18.8 million Ghanaians registered to vote will be able to take part in the country's ninth general election since multiparty politics was reintroduced in the early 1990s.

In the last 30 years, the country has had a series of closely fought but peaceful polls. Ghana has a reputation for the orderly transfer of power between administrations.

What are Ghanaians voting for?
On polling day, two elections will be taking place simultaneously:

Presidential – there are 12 candidates
Parliamentary – voters in 275 constituencies across the country will be choosing their MP.

Mahamudu Bawumia (L) and John Mahama (R) are the two leading candidates to replace Nana Akufo-Addo as president
Although 12 hopefuls are vying for the presidency, only two have a realistic chance of winning. Since the return of multiparty politics in 1992 only candidates from either the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have won.

The two front-runners are:

Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP) - Having served as Akufo-Addo’s vice-president for eight years, the 61-year-old Oxford-educated economist could make history as the country's first Muslim president. The former deputy governor of the central bank gained a reputation for his financial know-how. But that could also be his undoing as he has faced heavy criticism after Ghana plummeted into its most severe economic crisis in years under his watch.
John Mahama (NDC) – Winning this ballot would represent a comeback for the 65-year-old as he already served as president for four-and-a-half years from 2012 but then lost the 2016 election. In office, he was nicknamed “Mr Dumsor”, which is a reference to the power cuts that plagued his time in office. Amid the current tough economy, Mahama has pledged an “urgent reset” for the country that needs an experienced leader at the helm.
Among other candidates garnering attention are:

Nana Kwame Bediako – The businessman, also known as “Cheddar”, does not have a political background but has made a lot of impact on social media and attracted young supporters.
Alan Kyerematen – The former minister, nicknamed “Alan Cash”, left the NPP last year after complaining that the presidential primaries were biased against him. He could draw some NPP support in the party’s heartland in the Ashanti region.

Kenya's top judge: No-one has ever tried to bribe me

Kenya’s most senior judge has hit out following recent allegations of corruption and incompetence within the judiciary.

"In all these 22 years I’ve been a judge and a chief justice, nobody has ever approached me with a bribe. I would have them arrested," Martha Koome told the BBC.

The country’s first female chief justice has recently been accused of failing to properly investigate and tackle allegations of bribery and corruption within the judiciary.

Some Kenyans have been referring to "jurispesa" – a corruption of the legal term jurisprudence and pesa (the Swahili word for money) - implying there is corruption in the judiciary.

But she defended herself and her colleagues, asking anyone making such accusations to present the evidence to the security agencies or to the judicial oversight commission.

She told the BBC Africa Daily podcast that the claims were "supposed to lower my credibility. It is supposed to distract me. I know who I am and I know what I have done and what I am going to do."

She said she would always remain impartial.

AFRICA DAILY PODCAST: What are the priorities of Kenya's first female chief justice?
How Martha Koome overcame the odds to become chief justice
Kenya’s judiciary has long been marred by claims of corruption and in 2021 Justice Koome told the BBC that corruption was "a national embarrassment in and out of the judiciary.

She said that some of the criticism she faced was because of her gender. "It is total misogyny. It is total chauvinism."

She also said that one of the things she was most passionate about was addressing violence against women.

She said it was "completely disheartening" that "every other day there is a report of a young woman who has lost her life through violence".

Justice Koome said there were many matters of r**e that were not moving at all or were waiting in court for lack of witnesses.

There has been a recent increase in the levels of violence against women, with police announcing that nearly 100 women and girls had been killed in the past three months.

More than 500 women were victims of femicide in Kenya between 2016 and 2024, according to the Africa Data Hub.

Justice Koome expressed her commitment to addressing the issue by making justice available to women across the country.

She has said she aims to open 11 courts around the country specialising in sexual and gender-based crimes – with two of them already set up in the western Kisumu and Siaya counties.

"We have a lot of hope in them because cases of gender-based violence must be given priority. So that the victim who was violated does not keep coming to court, year in year out," she said.

Mauritius government suffers electoral wipeout

The opposition Alliance of Change in Mauritius has won all 60 seats up for grabs on the archipelago's main island following Sunday's parliamentary election.

Opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam, 77, said "the power of the people" had triumphed.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, 62, had already acknowledged on Monday that his Lepep alliance was heading for a "huge defeat".

Mauritius is known as one of Africa's most stable democracies, but this election was tainted by a phone-tapping scandal, with leaked recordings of public figures posted online.

In response, the government issued a social media ban until after the election, although this led to an outcry and the decision was reversed within 24 hours.

Final results are set to be released later on Tuesday.

Ramgoolam, a former doctor, looks set to become the country's prime minister for the third time. His second term in office, having served the last time between 2005 and 2014.

"The court of the people has delivered its verdict and a new Mauritius awakes," he told supporters.

"We must respect this choice... and we wish the country and the population good luck," said Jugnauth.

The mood in the capital Port Louis reflects this changing tide, as people gathered on Monday in anticipation of results that would signal a fresh direction for the country.

Dozens killed after car ploughs into crowd in China

At least 35 people were killed and 43 more injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of people exercising at a stadium in Zhuhai, China on Monday, according to authorities.

A 62-year-old male driver, surnamed Fan, is alleged to have driven an SUV through a barrier and into Zhuhai Sports Centre in what local police described as a "serious and vicious attack". Chinese media reported that many elderly people, as well as teenagers and children, were among the injured.

Fan was arrested while trying to flee, police said, and is currently in a coma as a result of self-inflicted wounds.

The incident took place despite heightened security in the city, which is hosting a major civil and military airshow.

Police have said initial investigations suggest the ramming attack was triggered by Fan’s dissatisfaction with the outcome of a property settlement following his divorce.

However, due to his coma, he is unable to be questioned by the authorities.

Most videos of the incident posted by eyewitnesses had been scrubbed off Chinese social media by internet censors by Tuesday morning, but some footage still circulating online showed many people lying on the ground and being attended to by paramedics and bystanders.

An eyewitness, Mr Chen, told Chinese news magazine Caixin that at least six groups of people had gathered at the stadium for their regular walks when the incident happened.

The groups use a designated walking path that traces the stadium's perimeter.

Mr Chen said his group had just completed its third lap around the stadium when a car suddenly charged towards them at a high speed, "knocking down many people".

"It drove in a loop, and people were hurt in all areas of the running track - east, south, west, and north," another eyewitness told Caixin.

It is unclear whether the incident was linked to the high-profile Airshow China, which started on Tuesday at a venue just 40km (24 miles) away from the stadium. China is showcasing its latest warplanes and attack drones at the show, and top Russian official Sergei Shoigu is expected to attend.

Several entrances and exits to the sports centre have been closed during the airshow to facilitate "control", the centre's management said on Tuesday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his deep concern over the incident, instructing authorities to make every effort to treat the injured and calling for the perpetrator to be severely punished.

In response, the central government dispatched a working group to help handle the incident.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.

GMA warns of rising alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct among doctors

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has voiced serious concerns regarding issues of alcohol misuse, drug abuse, and instances of sexual misconduct among some members.

The Association's President, Dr. Frank Serebour highlighted that such behaviour put patient care at risk, as affected doctors continue to work daily.

Speaking at the GMA’s annual general meeting, Dr. Serebour noted that the association is facing multiple lawsuits over allegations of medical and professional negligence, underscoring the urgent need for action to correct these issues.

“We have some health personnel involved in alcoholism and drug abuse, which impacts their quality of life,” he said.

He added that there have been severe cases of sexual harassment by health workers, with many complaints still under review by the Medical and Dental Council.

Dr. Serebour further expressed concern over rising legal actions against health facilities, noting that outcomes often reflect poorly on the profession.

He added that; “In some cases, we are left off the hook simply because the victims of our unprofessionalism choose to blame the witches and wizards instead of taking on the system.”

He also criticised certain unprofessional practices like chronic lateness, absenteeism, and insufficient work hours, questioning if professionalism is diminishing in the health sector.

"Is there an overwhelming focus on greed and selfishness? Some workers arrive at 9:00 a.m. and leave by noon, expecting to be paid for a full day," he remarked.

Ghana sees rise in human trafficking – Report

The 2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance has revealed that Ghana’s anti-trafficking measures saw negative results from 2018 to 2023.

Once hailed as a regional leader in the fight against trafficking, the country has seen a disturbing trend in a fall in the absence of human trafficking cases.

From 2013 to 2024, Ghana made notable progress in reducing trafficking activities, but recent reports indicate an alarming resurgence, reversing much of the progress made.

From 2014 to 2018, Ghana’s anti-trafficking measures saw positive results with a constant rating of 68.8 out of 100.

It however began to experience a fall from 2019 to 2023 with 2022 and 2023 recording the worst figure of 31.3. out of 100.

As part of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection’s aim to prevent human trafficking, 60 law enforcement agencies have been equipped with advanced level capacity-building training programme to understand the dimensions and the urgency to end adult and child trafficking, child labour, irregular migration and all forms of exploitation.

While Ghana has made considerable progress in its fight against human trafficking, the recent rise in cases highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the country.

The fall in the absence of trafficking in recent years signals that, greater efforts are needed to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent traffickers from exploiting them.
