When Hurricane Melissa hit, many of you stood with me as we shared those raw, real moments of survival; the destruction, the silence afterward, and the resilience that rose from the rubble. When Hurricane Melissa—one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Atlantic—devastated Westmoreland, Jamaica, darkness covered the parish. Yet within two hours, one man stood as a beacon of light, sharing with the world what had unfolded in his beloved community. is a gripping story of...

Six weeks after Hurricane Melissa…
Bluefields is rising again.

From the mountain to the lowlands and across the bay, you can see the progress: roofs repaired, farms reopening, families rebuilding. However, there is still a long road ahead and a great deal of work left to be done.

Every step forward is a reminder of our resilience as a community. Together, we will rebuild stronger than before.

With JPS still down and our two main Internet service providers unreliable, Bluefields Organic Farm remains one of the few places where families can consistently connect.

Thanks to Starlink and our restored solar panels, we’re offering:
✔️ Free Wi-Fi (extended coverage)
✔️ An opportunity for students and families to stay connected

We invite everyone, especially students (many still unable to return to school) to use this access to continue their learning during this recovery period.

We are also pleased to share that we’re now 68% toward our USD $5,500 goal to fully restore the solar system that powers this connectivity. Every contribution helps.

Five weeks after Hurricane Melissa, the land is already showing signs of healing. Our callaloo plants, planted right after the storm are now full, vibrant, and ready to harvest.

This is a simple ste but a powerful move toward food security for families rebuilding their lives.

What fast-growing crop should others affected by the hurricane be encouraged to start with?

Community After the Storm: What We Witnessed Today

Sandra and I visited 14 elderly and physically challenged residents across Blue Hole, Cotta Tree, and Blacks Bay.
It was humbling, eye-opening, and deeply emotional.

We met people we’ve known for years—still smiling, still welcoming, yet living in conditions no one should endure.

💡A blind woman sheltering two elders while her own roof leaks
💡A blind man anxious about returning borrowed zinc and plywood
💡Four adults who lost everything now sharing one damaged home offered by a generous neighbour

Their resilience is powerful. Their needs are urgent. Let’s stand with them.

Today we pause our work at the farm for something equally important, standing with the Bluefields Villa Foundation to reach out to some of our most precious yet vulnerable community members.

These are the quiet heroes of our community… the elderly, the disabled, and those who simply cannot push to the front when supplies are being shared. Too often they are forgotten, but not today.

Today, we come to them with respect, kindness, and support because true recovery isn’t measured only in rebuilt farms or restored systems. it’s measured in how we care for one another when it matters most.

Together, we rise. Together, we heal.
