It was only fitting that the first phase of the relief effort began right here — in the very community that shaped his story.

More than 600 schools islandwide have been damaged by Hurricane Melissa, according to the Ministry of Education.
The disclosure came following discussions earlier this week with principals from some of the affected institutions.
The Ministry has assured schools that the Government stands ready to assist with rebuilding and repairs as recovery efforts continue across the island.
CVM’s Giovannie Dennis caught up with senior ministry officials in Westmoreland late Friday afternoon for further details.

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) has announced that both in-person and online classes will resume on Monday, November 10, 2025, at its Main Campus in Papine, as well as the Arthur Wint Drive and Slipe Pen Road campuses in Kingston.

According to the university, MBA Level 2 students will return to classes a day earlier, on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

Meanwhile, at the Western Campus, classes will resume only at the Dome Street location. The Barnett Street (Montego Bay) and Ocho Rios sites will remain closed until further notice due to damage sustained during Hurricane Melissa.
UTech says it is also offering financial relief and welfare assistance to affected students.

The CVM team met former principal of Black River Primary and Infant School, Conrad Romans, at Black River High on Thursday.

The former educator shared his reaction to the school’s damage following Hurricane Melissa.

He also took the opportunity to proudly introduce his wife of over 50 years.

Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) President and St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) Principal, Keith Wellington, says staff members have also been significantly affected by Hurricane Melissa, with some losing their homes and others cut off from their communities. He emphasized the importance of reopening schools not only to resume education but also to provide a safe space for psychosocial support.
Wellington added that cleanup and minor repair efforts are currently underway.
