The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress Jamaica Spices (JaSPICE) Project is making significant strides in addressing critical issues that will drive local production of ginger, turmeric and pimento. The project, being implemented over the next five years, is geared towards revitalising the spice sector in Jamaica to meet existing export and domestic demands.

Research and Development Specialist on JaSPICE project, Michelle Sherwood, emphasised the project's commitment to innovation and collaboration at a recent JIS Think Tank.

"We partnered as a project with stakeholders at the beginning of the process at what we call a revisioning session, where we brought together stakeholders from across the agricultural sector, to help identify what are those issues that are predominantly needed to be addressed. This occurred in February of this year and at the end of it, we were able to identify those gaps and what are the research needs," she noted.

Three hundred agricultural wardens are to be trained over the next three years to combat praedial larceny and other agricultural crimes, says Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Floyd Green.

"These wardens are police officers who will be tasked to treat with agricultural crimes, and they will be deployed in praedial larceny hotspots," he said.

Minister Green, who was speaking to journalists following a recent tour of the Frome Sugar Factory in Westmoreland, said that the recruitment of officers has already begun and training is slated to commence this quarter.

SENIOR IN FARMING:

A happy and prosperous new year to you all. Despite the challenges - let God be your guide in 2025 . If you're not yet a farmer, now is the best time to start and if you are a farmer - keep farming and feeding the nation.

It's with great delight that I shall share the inspirational journey of Mr Danny Bennett.

Originally from Middle Quarters, St. Elizabeth, 58 years old Danny Bennett has now become a "city farmer" and is reaping heartily. He spent his earlier years in Middle Quarters, St. Elizabeth , and was raised in a family of farmers. His family leased lands to do mainly peanut farming. It was his dream and belief to be an entrepreneur and have multiple streams of income, as he detested working for people.

As a result of his belief, Mr. Bennett migrated to St. Catherine, where he lived for 20 years and was overseer of a livestock farm. However, in 2015 he returned to St. Elizabeth and became a taxi driver but became frustrated because of constant altercations with the police. He then became a chauffeur.

Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture, Dayton Campbell, has withdrawn his controversial proposal to impose a tax on imported agricultural produce to establish an Agricultural Development Fund. The suggestion sparked widespread criticism and forced the People's National Party (PNP) into damage control, with political analysts labelling it a misstep ahead of the general elections expected by September.

Campbell's remarks made at a meeting in South East St. Elizabeth, drew immediate backlash from the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and fuelled heated public debate over its potential economic impact.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Agriculture Minister Floyd Green were among those who criticised the idea, warning that such a tax would increase food prices without necessarily boosting local production.
