One of my favorite things about vacationing in Hawaiʻi is the time difference.

Being a few hours ahead means I’m usually awake before most people are. It’s the perfect time to head out for a cup of coffee, walk down to the beach to enjoy a quiet moment before everyone else is up and about. Sometimes it’s watching the sunrise. Sometimes it’s simply enjoying the sound of the waves before everyone else arrives.

For me, those quiet mornings often are my favorite moments of the trip.

Graduation season in Hawai‘i is a different experience than in other states.

At the end of the commencement, graduates are met by family and friends in an outdoor area for a lei ceremony. By the end of the ceremony graduates are often covered in layers of leis that they received from family and friends.

Fresh flowers, candy leis, ribbon leis, kukui nut leis, handmade money leis… each one representing love, pride, and celebration.

It’s one of those moments that reminds you Hawai‘i is more than just beautiful scenery. There’s a deep sense of community and tradition woven into everyday life there.
