Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby, has called for dialogue between municipal corporations and the government on a proposal to introduce a centralized permit system for entertainment events.

The mayor also called for dialogue in relation to the establishment of the one road authority, which will regulate the management of Jamaica’s road infrastructure.

Mayor Swaby said he does not disagree with change, but believes it should be accompanied by consultation.

He said the systems will take away two of the main functions of the municipal corporations.

The Government has commenced road patching works in Kingston under the Go Road Rehabilitation Programme.

The works target priority corridors that require immediate repair to improve road safety and driving conditions.

Work has begun along Waterloo Road, East Kings House road, Mandela Highway and several other roads in Kingston and St Andrew.

These initial activities form part of a wider, phased effort to address deteriorated roadway sections, with a focus on areas affected by scouring, potholes, and general surface failure.

Minister with responsibility for works Robert Nesta Morgan, explains that the go programme will expand beyond Kingston and move into other parishes in the coming days.

This comes as works continue islandwide in a structured rollout aimed at restoring key routes and supporting daily commuting, commerce, and public transportation.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution, when travelling through active work zones, obey posted instructions, and expect intermittent delays as crews carry out patching operations.

Further updates on the programme’s rollout schedule and the next areas to be targeted will be provided as works progress.

The $1.6 billion Graded Overlay Emergency Road Rehabilitation (GO) Programme, will see works being undertaken on several critical corridors across the island, many of which were damaged by potholing and scouring during Hurricane Melissa.

Glenmuir and St. Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) will meet to crown this year’s ISSA DaCosta Cup champion after both schools booked their places in the final with hard-fought semi-final victories at Sabina Park on Wednesday.

The highly anticipated match-up is a repeat of the 2012 DaCosta Cup final and was confirmed after Glenmuir and STETHS overcame Dinthill Technical and Kemps Hill High respectively to remain on course for silverware.

Glenmuir, contesting the opening semi-final, secured their spot with a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Dinthill. After a scoreless first half, Dinthill struck first in the 47th minute when Omanie Morrison found the net to give the Lenworth Hyde-coached side the lead.

However, Glenmuir captain Orane Watson delivered an inspired performance, scoring twice to turn the contest on its head. Watson equalised in the 63rd minute before sealing the win deep into stoppage time with a decisive strike in the 92nd minute.

The result keeps the reigning ISSA Champions Cup holders firmly on track for a fourth DaCosta Cup title.

In the second semi-final, five-time winners STETHS advanced after grinding out a 1-0 victory over first-time semi-finalists Kemps Hill. The lone goal came in the 48th minute courtesy of Kenoy Banton, whose strike proved enough to separate the teams in a tightly contested affair.

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz could be on a potential collision course with West-African powerhouse Nigeria in the FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs next March, should they overcome first-round opponents New Caledonia, amid an escalating eligibility dispute involving the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DR Congo, who edged Nigeria on penalties in Morocco in November to secure Africa’s place in the Intercontinental Playoffs, are now under scrutiny following reports that they may have breached FIFA eligibility regulations. According to Nigeria’s National Accord newspaper, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) believes several players who featured in that contest were not properly cleared to represent DR Congo.

At the centre of the controversy are players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, both of whom are alleged to have been ineligible because Congolese law does not officially recognize dual citizenship. The NFF argues that the players had not fully completed the eligibility switch process and still held foreign passports at the time of the playoff fixture, potentially placing DR Congo in violation of FIFA statutes.

The Congolese Football Federation has strongly rejected the claims, dismissing Nigeria’s protest as an act of poor sportsmanship and branding the Super Eagles as “bad losers” following their defeat.

It is understood that a formal petition has been submitted, challenging DR Congo’s participation in the decisive playoff. FIFA has not yet publicly commented, but several possible outcomes could emerge once the matter is reviewed.

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), says the 7% increase on November electricity bills is necessary to help sustain the recovery of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) following disruptions caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The adjustment follows JPS’ announcement that customers will see higher bills this month due to increased fuel and Independent Power Producer (IPP) costs after Hurricane Melissa.

Speaking at a press briefing, OUR’s Director-General Ansord Hewitt explained that while the OUR is mindful of avoiding “bill shocks” for customers, the current period is exceptionally challenging.

Mr Hewitt acknowledged that many customers’ ability to pay, has been affected significantly, but stressed that the adjustment is also critical to maintaining JPS’ cash flow and ensuring a faster and more sustainable recovery of the electricity system.
