Junkanoo originated from Africans and was possibly named after a West African leader/Warrior named John Canoe. It is usually celebrated during Christmas time.

The celebration is preserved in our cultural festivals and heritage events to include the school curriculum which features include vibrant masquerade costumes with characters mocking common figures in society.

Music includes drums and whistles with rhythmic dance and drama. Street parades can be seen during Christmas time or Independence Celebrations in areas such as St. Thomas, Portland, Kingston and Trelawny.
