Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) has expressed hope that in the last quarter of this year, conditions will be favourable to allow commercial banks’ interest rates to reduce.

The issue of commercial banks refusing to lower their interest rates in line with the BOJ’s policy rate has been a major sore point for Jamaicans, with several calls for the Bank to intervene.

In January, BOJ Governor Richard Byles had said the Central Bank was contemplating addressing the issue through legal means.

When asked about the issue this week, Mr. Byles explained that there has been some decline in the rates.

He noted that while he hopes for a further reduction, he is appreciative of the current downward trend.

In less than nine hours, the nation’s two major political parties will face off in the first of three national political debates.

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) are determined to prove to Jamaicans that they are the right choice to govern the country.

By presenting their parties’ vision to the nation and highlighting their best policies, the aim is for citizens to use that information to decide on who they will vote for in the General Elections slated for Wednesday, September 3.

This evening’s televised debate, which begins at 9 PM, will see the two teams answering questions on social issues.

The JLP’s Pearnel Charles Jr., Kamina Johnson Smith and Matthew Samuda will face the PNP’s Damion Crawford, Raymond Pryce and Sophia Fraser-Binns.

Speaking with IRIE FM News this morning, Chairman of the Jamaica Debates Commission, Brian Schmidt, said the Commission is making final preparations for this evening’s event.

Jamaican motor-sport racer Tommi Gore returns to the track this weekend as Round 4 of the ADAC GT4 Germany Championship gets underway at the Sachsenring circuit in eastern Germany.

Gore, driving for the AVIA W&S Motorsport team alongside Israeli teammate Alon Gabbay, will be looking to build on the momentum gained from Round 3 at the world-famous Nürburgring, where the pair secured a seventh-place finish. That top-10 performance marked an impressive comeback after a difficult outing at Norisring in Round 2, where mechanical and technical issues hampered their chances.

With that result, the Jamaican-Israeli duo climbed into 15th position in the overall series standings and will be hoping for another strong showing this weekend.

The Sachsenring round got underway this morning Jamaica time with two practice sessions. Qualifying and the first race are scheduled for Saturday, with the second race set for Sunday.

Singer George Nooks, gospel artist Kukudo, and creative arts professional Dr. Amina Blackwood Meeks are among the first set of creatives to receive health cards under the Jamaica Entertainers and Creatives Insurance Plan (JECIP).

George Nooks is expressing gratitude for the special provision made for entertainers.

Dr. Amina Blackwood Meeks adds that the initiative is significant as it recognizes the dignity and value that cultural workers deserve.

The initiative, launched through a partnership between the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and Guardian Life Limited, provides health coverage for creatives who are often outside the traditional employment structure.

The plan covers loss of limb, maternity, doctor visits, hospitalization, and even overseas care. Access is available only to those enrolled in the Ministry’s e-Registry.

Notably, the rollout of health cards for entertainers and creatives comes just weeks before the next general election.

The railcars from the UC Rusal train, which derailed on Saturday August 9, have been removed from the Bog Walk area in St. Catherine, with minimal impact to the natural environment.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) gave the update yesterdayday.

The train, was transporting alumina from Ewarton Works to Port Esquivel, when three of its hopper-cars went over an embankment.

NEPA said the incident resulted in only minimal spillage of the alumina.

Assessments revealed that, this was confined to the base of the embankment.

NEPA also observed that the Rio Cobre was not contaminated.

It said the spilt material was not hazardous and there was no fish kill.

NEPA noted that it monitored the cleanup operation by UC Rusal and is satisfied that this was done in a manner that preserved the area’s natural environment.

The Ministry of Foreign of Affairs says it continues its steadfast efforts towards the early return of a Jamaican man who was recently deported to Eswatini from the United States.

Last month the BBC reported that Jamaican National Isaac Etoria, and 4 other people from Vietnam, Laos, Cuba and Yemen were transferred to the Southern African country.

The US described them as “criminal illegal aliens” who have been convicted of crimes ranging from child r**e to murder.

Jamaica’s Foreign Ministry had initiated enquiries with the US in relation to Mr. Etoria.

In a statement yesterday, portfolio Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, said a representative of the Jamaican High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, accompanied by the honorary consul for Jamaica in Eswatini, visited Mr. Etoria yesterday.

She said the team found Mr. Etoria in good spirits.
