Yukemuri no Sato Azumaya is a truly atmospheric onsen experience in Beppu. Located about a 15-minute drive from JR Beppu Station, this peaceful retreat is named after the gentle steam, "yukemuri" that rises from Beppu’s natural hot springs. And at night, the property becomes even more magical as the steam is illuminated with soft, colorful lights, creating a dreamlike landscape you won’t find anywhere else.

Azumaya functions both as a hotel and as a drop-in onsen, making it perfect whether you’re planning an overnight stay or just looking to unwind for a few hours. One of its biggest highlights is that every guest room comes with a private bath, an ideal option for those who prefer to soak in complete privacy or simply want a peaceful escape.

For guests who want to experience a more traditional setting, the open-air baths are a must-visit. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Beppu, breathtaking no matter the time of day. Eggs boiled in the onsen water are also available for you to experience!

Looking for a charming spot in Beppu where you can slow down and savor a taste of traditional Japan? Amamichaya is a beloved local café that captures the warmth of an old-fashioned Japanese teahouse, making it a perfect stop for travelers seeking something authentic and heartwarming. Located about a 15-minute drive from JR Beppu Station, it’s an easy detour from the city center, and absolutely worth it.
Amamichaya is known for its nostalgic atmosphere, but what truly sets it apart is its menu. The café offers a wide range of sweet and savory dishes, including several specialties that you can only find here in Oita Prefecture. One must-try is Dango Jiru, a comforting regional soup featuring dango dough stretched into thin, noodle-like shapes and simmered with seasonal vegetables. It’s simple, rustic, and incredibly satisfying.
Another favorite of the locals is Yaseuma. This classic Oita sweet is made from the same stretched dango dough, served warm and generously coated in fragrant kinako (roasted soybean flour). It’s soft, chewy, and delightfully nostalgic, offering a taste of Japan’s countryside traditions.
Whether you’re a foodie, a café lover, or simply curious about regional Japanese cuisine, Amamichaya offers a relaxed, old-time atmosphere that invites you to linger. Take a break from the bustle, enjoy a meal made with care, and experience the flavors that locals have loved for generations.

If you’re planning a trip to Beppu and looking for an onsen experience that’s both rare and unforgettable, Ichinoide Kaikan in the Kankaiji Onsen area deserves a spot at the top of your list. Just a quick 15-minute drive from JR Beppu Station, this hidden gem is known for something you won’t find in many places across Japan: naturally cobalt-blue hot spring water. Its striking color alone is enough to make you stop and stare, but the experience goes far beyond that.

Ichinoide Kaikan features two bathing areas that alternate daily between men and women. The first is the aptly named Scenic Bath, a spacious open-air bath perched on a hill overlooking Beppu Bay. Soaking here feels like drifting between sea and sky, with panoramic views that shift in color and mood throughout the day.

The second area consists of three smaller baths that once served as family baths. They may be more intimate, but they offer the same naturally hot cobalt-blue waters. Each tub has its own charm, making it a great place for travelers who prefer quiet, cozy spaces.

Whether you're relaxing in the hilltop bath or unwinding in the smaller tubs, you’ll be sharing the experience with friendly locals who frequent the onsen. Ichinoide Kaikan is the perfect blend of everyday community life and extraordinary natural beauty, giving you a true taste of Beppu’s onsen culture.

Located at the heart of Beppu City, Beppu Park serves as a place of gathering amongst a beautiful natural backdrop for locals and travelers alike. The crisp air at this time of year provides a clear view of the variety of foliage and plants alike, making this a perfect spot for a leisurely Autumn stroll.

Founded in 1907 to coincide with the visit of the Emperor Taisho (Crown Prince at the time), it has been a popular spot for gatherings ever since.

As if a sight out of a dream, the milky white-blue waters of Mugen no Sato Shunkashuto Onsen are a hidden oasis tucked away in the mountains of Beppu.

Located around a 10 minute drive from JR Beppu Station, your journey will take you into the foothills of Mt Tsurumi, surrounded by a lush forest. After paying at the entrance, crossing a bridge that suspends over the river below will take you to the baths.

The facility itself offers a variety of public and private areas, all featuring the glittering natural milky onsen waters that bubble up from the premise.

The public men’s and women’s baths are located in the open air, illuminated by the sunlight filtering through the surrounding trees. The private baths are a mix of open air and indoors, with the most popular being the “Waterfall bath,” which allows bathers to enjoy the natural ambience and sight of water flowing down the rock wall adjacent.

The “Shunkashuto” part of the name Mugen no Sato Shunkashuto is comprised of the kanji for the four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. There is no better meaning for this onsen, as the location, facility, and waters itself allow bathers to fully enjoy the majesty of Beppu’s natural beauty.

Sitting along the banks of a river and nestled among the green leaves of the surrounding forest, Shibaseki Onsen is enriched by natural scenery.
Located around a 20 minute drive from JR Beppu Station, it offers a respite from busy city life thanks to its mountain backdrop.

Featuring two indoor baths with various temperatures as well as an open air bath, steam bath, and family bath, Shibaseki Onsen is beloved by the locals as a place of rest and relaxation. History tells that it has also been favored by the Imperial Family in the past, with two emperors having visited in 895 and 1044 respectively to help recover from illness.
The waters are said to help with ailments ranging from sore muscles to symptoms due to stress such as insomnia and depression.

The connection to nature doesn’t stop with the scenery however, as the facility utilizes natural stone and wood materials across its baths and relaxation rooms. The name “Shibaseki” itself comes from a grass (“shiba”) fossil that was found in the surrounding stone ("seki") during the Edo period. You can see this piece of history displayed at the reception desk before you head into the various baths.

Let your stress and fatigue wash away in these historic therapeutic onsen waters while enjoying the sights and sounds of the natural backdrop at Shibaseki Onsen.

Immersing yourself in hot natural spring water amongst a natural backdrop at Horita Onsen might just be the experience you need to fully relax and recover.

Only 10 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station, Horita Onsen is the one of the eight historic onsen collectively known as Beppu Hattō and has been an integral part of the local community since the Edo Period.

The new Horita Onsen was opened in April of 2003, and draws on those same historic waters but with a specially designed facility that emphasizes the rejuvenating effects of nature.

The interior bath is spacious but still maintains a connection to the outdoors through large floor to ceiling windows that let the natural light flow in.
The outdoor open-air bath is also visible from the inside, including the seasonally designed landscaping featuring both rock formations as well as plants and trees.
The tranquil and serene environment allows for the ultimate unwinding.

But the experience doesn’t stop there, the building also features a relaxation room for those who have finished bathing. Allow yourself to fully enjoy the process from start to finish.
The facility is also fully handicapped friendly, making it beloved by locals and travellers of all ages.

The Horita Onsen is a must-visit spot to fully appreciate Beppu’s natural waters and beauty.

High above the bay below, there is one place that offers a majestic panoramic view of Beppu and the neighboring Mount Yufu, and that would be the summit of Mount Tsurumi.
And there happens to be no better way to get there than Beppu Ropeway, the largest cable car in Kyushu.

With a max capacity of 101 passengers, it connects Beppu Kogen Station (20 minutes by bus from JR Beppu Station) to Tsurumi Sanjo Station, climbing approximately 800m in elevation.
This provides the perfect viewpoint to take in the scenery of Japan’s premier onsen destination at the foothills below.

Mount Tsurumi boasts a height of over 1300m above sea level, and due to this elevation it is the first place to experience Autumn in the region. This September will be the perfect time to see this season changing in action with the foliage beginning to turn orange and red.

The top of the Beppu Ropeway also is home to various pilgrimage sites such as shrines and statues. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and open skies as you walk the paths connecting these historic features, such as the Seven Lucky Gods statues.

Whether during the day or night, taking in the scenery via Beppu Ropeway will be the perfect way to top off your Beppu travel itinerary.
