Immersing yourself in hot natural spring water amongst a natural backdrop at Horita Onsen might just be the experience you need to fully relax and recover.

Only 10 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station, Horita Onsen is the one of the eight historic onsen collectively known as Beppu Hattō and has been an integral part of the local community since the Edo Period.

The new Horita Onsen was opened in April of 2003, and draws on those same historic waters but with a specially designed facility that emphasizes the rejuvenating effects of nature.

The interior bath is spacious but still maintains a connection to the outdoors through large floor to ceiling windows that let the natural light flow in.
The outdoor open-air bath is also visible from the inside, including the seasonally designed landscaping featuring both rock formations as well as plants and trees.
The tranquil and serene environment allows for the ultimate unwinding.

But the experience doesn’t stop there, the building also features a relaxation room for those who have finished bathing. Allow yourself to fully enjoy the process from start to finish.
The facility is also fully handicapped friendly, making it beloved by locals and travellers of all ages.

The Horita Onsen is a must-visit spot to fully appreciate Beppu’s natural waters and beauty.

High above the bay below, there is one place that offers a majestic panoramic view of Beppu and the neighboring Mount Yufu, and that would be the summit of Mount Tsurumi.
And there happens to be no better way to get there than Beppu Ropeway, the largest cable car in Kyushu.

With a max capacity of 101 passengers, it connects Beppu Kogen Station (20 minutes by bus from JR Beppu Station) to Tsurumi Sanjo Station, climbing approximately 800m in elevation.
This provides the perfect viewpoint to take in the scenery of Japan’s premier onsen destination at the foothills below.

Mount Tsurumi boasts a height of over 1300m above sea level, and due to this elevation it is the first place to experience Autumn in the region. This September will be the perfect time to see this season changing in action with the foliage beginning to turn orange and red.

The top of the Beppu Ropeway also is home to various pilgrimage sites such as shrines and statues. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and open skies as you walk the paths connecting these historic features, such as the Seven Lucky Gods statues.

Whether during the day or night, taking in the scenery via Beppu Ropeway will be the perfect way to top off your Beppu travel itinerary.

Feeling like you’d like to connect more with the “real” Japan rather than only scratching the surface at tourist traps? Experience life as the locals do at the Beppu Municipality operated Hamawaki Onsen.

The namesake of the Hamawaki area, this onsen was originally built in the early Showa era and has been a staple for local residents ever since. Only 10 minutes by car from JR Beppu Station, it is located on a picturesque street amongst old fashioned inns and buildings reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras.
With rare extended opening hours from 6:30am to 1 in the morning, it is still an indispensable part of life in the area almost a century later.

The onsen itself features two baths with gorgeous Amakusa Porcelain Stone floors sourced from nearby Kumamoto Prefecture. One boasts hot water and one with a more lukewarm temperature, allowing for bathers to choose which they like best.
The natural mineral water’s healing properties can help relieve stress, relax muscles, and cure fatigue for even the most weary visitors. Tattoos are also allowed, making it easy for travellers to participate in the experience.

Connect with a slice of culture that you normally wouldn’t be able to see by bathing among the locals at Hamawaki Onsen!

The fast paced way of life during this digital age leaves many looking for a serene retreat among nature.

Looking over the Beppu region, Mount Tsurumi is home to many of these scenic natural views; including ones steeped in the rich history and mythology of the area.
Nestled in the forest at its foothills and only a 11 minute ride by car from JR Beppu Station lies Honoo Honome Shrine, a place of worship that is deeply tied to this past.

The shrine dates back to 771 AD and is dedicated to two defied peaks of Mount Tsurumi.
Named Honoo no kami and Honome no kami respectively, it is said that these deities helped quell the region’s 867 AD eruption and continue to watch over the iconic onsen hot springs that define Beppu to this day. You can even bring some of the protection home with you by purchasing one of the various omamori protection amulets available.

Surrounded by nature, the shrine offers a serene look into the area’s traditions.
It is the perfect place for people looking for a tranquil retreat from the stress of everyday life, while providing a great opportunity to see traditional architecture up close.
This makes the Honoo Honome Shrine a must-visit for travelers who love Japanese culture and history.

Summer in Beppu calls for food that is light, refreshing, and full of flavor. One dish that perfectly fits the season is Ryukyu-don, a local specialty of Oita. Freshly caught fish is marinated in a sweet and savory soy-based sauce, then served over a bowl of rice. The result is cool, nourishing, and deeply satisfying on a hot day.

Just steps from Beppu Station, the long-established restaurant Izutsu has been serving this dish with pride for generations. Once a fishmonger, Izutsu is known for its impeccable seafood, offering the very best of the day’s local catch. Their Ryukyu-don highlights the natural flavor of the fish while giving visitors a true taste of Oita’s coastal traditions.

After a day exploring Beppu’s hot springs and sights, Ryukyu-don is the perfect way to recharge. It’s a dish that is both healthy and deeply rooted in local culture, making it a must-try for seafood lovers visiting Beppu this summer.

We love cooler escapes in this summer heat.

Just a 20-minute drive from the city center, Shidaka Lake offers a peaceful highland retreat at 600 meters above sea level. In summer, the temperature here feels several degrees cooler than in town. Surrounded by lush greenery and cool mountain air, it’s a perfect spot to slow down, recharge, and enjoy nature at its best.

One of the highlights is the whimsical pedal boats shaped like swans and whales. Gliding across the calm water is both relaxing and fun, especially if you’re lucky enough to be followed by curious real swans!

For a refreshing treat, stop by the natural spring near the dock and taste the crystal-clear mountain water. It’s cold, clean, and perfect for refilling your bottle.

If you’re feeling more active, you can also walk around the lakeshore or continue on to nearby Kagurame Lake. The lake is about 1km in circumference, making it a perfect short hike.

A visit to Shidaka Lake pairs beautifully with your onsen stay in Beppu, offering a cool change of pace.

Curious to bathe in one of Japan’s most powerful hot springs?
Just outside Beppu, Tsukahara Onsen Kakō-no-Izumi offers a rare encounter with Japan’s volcanic energy. Tucked into the slopes of Mount Garan in the Tsukahara Highlands, this rustic open-air bath features one of the most acidic hot spring waters in the country, with a pH of around 1.5. This is even more acidic than lemon juice.

This onsen's milky, sulfur-rich spring is ranked among Japan’s top three most acidic onsen. Its full classification “Acidic Sulfur-Ferric-Aluminum-Calcium Sulfate Spring” speaks to its mineral rich composition, renowned for detoxifying, antibacterial, and skin-purifying benefits.

Surrounded by fresh mountain air and sweeping views, it’s a peaceful retreat into nature. According to legend, the spring was discovered in the 12th century, when a warrior spotted a wounded deer healing in its steaming waters.

Whether you’re a seasoned onsen-goer or simply looking to unwind in a wild and elemental setting, Kakō-no-Izumi is a great chance to experience the untamed power of Japan’s geothermal landscape.

Looking to bring home more than just photos from your trip to Beppu? Try making your own piece of Hijiyaki pottery.

Hijiyaki pottery comes from Hiji Town, just next to Beppu in Oita Prefecture, and is known for its playful and original designs. At Fujiwara Kiln, a short trip from the city, you can join a hands-on workshop using local clay to shape your own cup or dish. Some designs include charming details - like teacups that reveal a flounder when filled or sake cups with hidden motifs. Workshops start at around ¥2,000 and include materials and firing. Reservations are required. It’s a fun, beginner-friendly activity for all ages and a great way to create a personal, meaningful souvenir.

If you’re more in the mood to browse, don’t miss Seizan Kiln nearby. Artist Seizan Koishi creates refined pieces using natural ash glazes and real gold accents, blending traditional techniques with elegant craftsmanship.

Tucked into the peaceful countryside, both spots offer a chance to slow down and connect with the creative side of Beppu.
