On a warm summer day in Beppu, few things feel better than slipping into a quiet hot spring tucked in the hills.
Just a short walk from Beppu’s famous “Hell Tour” attractions, Oniishi no Yu is a calm and welcoming onsen, perfect for a break between sightseeing.

It’s a peaceful spot where you can enjoy nature, soak in silence, and recharge at your own pace.

The mineral water here is gently acidic and rich in metasilicic acid, which helps leave your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Oniishi no Yu also offers basic English support, so international visitors can enjoy with ease.

Looking to cool off this summer in Beppu?
Take a dip at Sekinoe Beach, a local favorite where calm, shallow waters and scenic coastal views create the perfect spot for a relaxed seaside day.

Located just a short drive from central Beppu, this beach is known for its gentle waves and family-friendly shoreline. The shallow water makes it especially welcoming for children and beginner swimmers, while the open skies and surrounding greenery offer a peaceful backdrop for sunbathing or a lazy afternoon stroll.

What makes Sekinoe even more special is its location in Beppu - the city where hot springs meet the sea. Start your day with a refreshing swim, then head to one of the many nearby onsen to soak and unwind. It’s a local luxury that captures the easygoing rhythm of summer in Japan.

If you’re in Beppu this season, Sekinoe Beach offers a unique way to enjoy the city’s natural beauty and make the most of the summer heat. Pack your swimsuit and a towel, and let the sea breeze lead the way.

Need a quiet escape to refresh your body and soul in Beppu?
Step into the peaceful grounds of Hachiman Asami Shrine, one of Beppu’s most cherished spiritual spots.

Tucked into the hills near the city center, this centuries-old shrine has been a place of prayer and protection since its founding in 1196. Surrounded by towering trees like camphors and oaks, the sacred forest breathes with life. It is home to wild birds, small animals, and clear, quiet air that invites deep breaths and reflection. The site is designated a municipal biodiversity conservation area and special conservation forest.

Visitors often say they can feel the natural energy here. Whether you’re joining in a traditional shrine visit, walking beneath the dappled summer light, or simply sitting in silence, there’s a special calm that lingers.

On July 1st, the shrine will host the Nagoshi Oomatsuri, a mid-summer ritual to cleanse away half-year burdens and pray for health in the months ahead. Walking through the large ring of woven grass (chinowa) is a meaningful seasonal tradition.

Whether you’re interested in Japanese culture, local history, or just a peaceful pause between onsen visits, Hachiman Asami Shrine offers a beautiful balance of nature, tradition, and quiet strength in Beppu.

Craving something crispy, juicy, and uniquely local?
Beppu’s beloved toriten (chicken tempura) is a must-try dish for any foodie exploring the area. Lightly battered and deep-fried to perfection, toriten is comforting and flavorful, and tied to Oita’s culinary culture.

One of the best places to try it? Toyo-Ken, the restaurant credited with creating the original toriten back in 1926. They recommend eating with a zesty citrus-based dipping sauce that is very refreshing and delicious. Beyond the food, Toyo-Ken offers a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that reflects Japan’s modern take on nostalgic dining. Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends and family, it’s the kind of place where great flavors and warm hospitality come together.

Looking to experience Beppu like a local? Start with a bite of its culinary heritage.
You’ll not only enjoy a satisfying meal, you’ll also taste a piece of Beppu’s history.

Looking for a one-of-a-kind cultural experience in Beppu?
Try your hand at Beppu Takezaiku (traditional bamboo weaving) at the Geothermal Tourism Lab ENMA.

Rooted in centuries of tradition, Beppu’s bamboo craftsmanship is closely tied to the area’s natural surroundings. Today, you can join a hands-on workshop led by local artisans and create your own shikichikudama, a colorful bamboo ornament made from madake bamboo. The bamboo is grown in Oita, which produces 80% of Japan’s supply. The result is a little souvenir you can take home, a handmade keepsake of personal and cultural meaning.

What makes this experience truly unique is the setting. The workshop takes place in a facility that uses geothermal steam from Beppu’s famous hot springs to soften and dye the bamboo—a vintage-inspired method that brings together nature and tradition. The atmosphere is both creative and calming, with views of the surrounding greenery and gentle steam rising in the background.

Workshops are beginner-friendly and perfect for visitors of all ages. A great way to slow down, get creative, and take home a piece of Beppu you made yourself!

Ever soaked in milky-white mineral water straight from the earth?
At Yunosato in Beppu’s Myoban Onsen area, the sulfur-rich hot spring water is the star of the show.

Tucked into the mountains, Yunosato is known for its charming thatched-roof bathhouses and its distinctive milky white sulfur springs. The mineral-rich waters are famous for their skin-soothing properties and gentle scent, offering a deeply relaxing soak surrounded by fresh mountain air and seasonal scenery.

One of the highlights here is the chance to see how Yunohana (medicinal bath salts) are made. These pale-blue crystals are a Myoban specialty, formed through a traditional process that uses steam from the hot springs. Visitors can tour the small production huts and pick up Yunohana as a thoughtful gift or souvenir to enjoy back home.

You’ll also find a selection of local steam-cooked treats made using only the hot spring’s natural steam. Grab a soft-boiled egg, sweet steamed bun, corn on the cob, or soft-serve ice cream for a quick and satisfying bite between baths.

For a soak that brings together water, warmth, and flavor, Yunosato offers an only-in-Beppu kind of experience!

Take your Beppu journey to new heights with a visit to Mt. Tsurumi!

Just a short ride from the city, the Beppu Ropeway carries you on a 10-minute trip up to the summit, which rises to around 1,300 meters above sea level. In May, the mountain is alive with vibrant greens and the seasonal bloom of Miyama Kirishima, a Kyushu-native azalea that brightens the landscape with soft pinks and purples.

The summit offers gentle hiking trails, cool mountain air, and quiet spots perfect for a picnic or a moment of reflection. With its mix of natural beauty and panoramic scenery, Mt. Tsurumi is a favorite for both local explorers and international travelers.

Before or after your ride, stop by the Kyushu Shochu-kan located near the base station. With over 500 varieties of shochu from across Kyushu, as well as sake, wine, and thoughtful souvenirs, the shop is worth a visit even for non-drinkers.

From the hot springs in the valley to the peaceful peaks above, Beppu invites you to explore its many sides. May is a wonderful time to experience the city from every angle.

In Beppu, every hot spring carries a story — some stretching back over a thousand years.

The city is home to Beppu Hatto, eight distinct hot spring areas scattered across town, each with its own character and charm. From the coastal breezes of Hamawaki to the steamy hills of Kannawa, no two visits are ever the same.

Among them, Shibaseki Onsen stands out with a legacy that dates back to ancient emperors of the 9th and 11th centuries. Its name, Shibaseki, comes from “brushwood” fossils discovered there during the Edo period. Known as a “healing spring” for centuries, Shibaseki remains a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature; a perfect place to experience Beppu’s timeless bond with hot water and well-being.

Beyond the baths, Beppu itself is full of new energy this season. With fresh green landscapes and lively spring festivals, it’s the great time to explore local cafes, wander through charming hot spring streets, and feel the vibrant spirit of the city.
