Need a quiet escape to refresh your body and soul in Beppu?
Step into the peaceful grounds of Hachiman Asami Shrine, one of Beppu’s most cherished spiritual spots.
Tucked into the hills near the city center, this centuries-old shrine has been a place of prayer and protection since its founding in 1196. Surrounded by towering trees like camphors and oaks, the sacred forest breathes with life. It is home to wild birds, small animals, and clear, quiet air that invites deep breaths and reflection. The site is designated a municipal biodiversity conservation area and special conservation forest.
Visitors often say they can feel the natural energy here. Whether you’re joining in a traditional shrine visit, walking beneath the dappled summer light, or simply sitting in silence, there’s a special calm that lingers.
On July 1st, the shrine will host the Nagoshi Oomatsuri, a mid-summer ritual to cleanse away half-year burdens and pray for health in the months ahead. Walking through the large ring of woven grass (chinowa) is a meaningful seasonal tradition.
Whether you’re interested in Japanese culture, local history, or just a peaceful pause between onsen visits, Hachiman Asami Shrine offers a beautiful balance of nature, tradition, and quiet strength in Beppu.
