🇯🇵 ARE JAPANESE PEOPLE REALLY FRIENDLY? 🤔

Before coming to Japan, you may have heard that Japanese people are polite and respectful but does being polite always mean being friendly?

From my experience living in Japan, I’ve learned there’s a difference between politeness, friendliness, and becoming close friends.

🇯🇵 My daughter wore perfume to school in Japan… then the school called me. 😳

I honestly didn’t know this could be an issue.

In our family, we love smelling good. I personally love sweet, fruity and mild fragrances, and my daughter also likes using a little fragrance.

When she was in nursery school, we never had an issue. But after she entered elementary school, something happened that really surprised me.

My daughter plays basketball, so after practice she would clean herself with wet wipes and sometimes use a little perfume because she wanted to feel fresh.

Then one day, her school called me in.

They explained that she shouldn’t wear perfume to school because fragrances can bother some students and that perfume wasn’t allowed at her school.

I was shocked! 😳

Not because I disagreed with the school—we stopped sending her with perfume once we understood the rule—but because it was completely different from what I was used to.

Where I come from, wearing perfume is very normal. You get dressed, put on your fragrance and go about your day.

And then I remembered something else…

Sometimes when I visited school wearing perfume, teachers could tell I had arrived before they even saw me! 😂

They would say something like, “I think she’s here,” just from recognizing my fragrance.

That’s when I started realizing how noticeable fragrances can be in an environment where people may not wear strong scents very often.

This is only my family’s experience in Japan, and different schools and workplaces may have different rules.

Now I’m curious: What is it like in your country?

Is wearing perfume to school or work completely normal?
