An earthquake swarm has been rattling the Aegean Sea near the island of Santorini in Greece for the last 3 weeks with up to 12,000 tremors recorded so far. Whilst none of the quakes have been destructive so far the Greek government has issued a state of emergency leading to the evacuation of many residents from Santorini and nearby islands. No-one knows for sure how long this will continual, whether it's leading to a bigger event or will just gradually fizzle out.

For those interested in tracking the seismicity in the area, I'm running a live stream on my Youtube channel of raw data from two Raspberry Shake devices on the nearby island of Crete. In the last hour a M5.0 rattled the area and you can see it clearly on the traces. I've included the link in the comments below.

Powerful category 5 (BoM scale) cyclone Zelia is only hours away from landfall in Western Australia, and it's now down to the wobbles as to how close the eyewall gets to Port Hedland. It's impossible to tell if the core will impact the city or pass just east. One small bit of good news is being on the "left" side of the cyclone, storm surge impacts should be greatly reduced with the winds blowing offshore. I've included recent radar image and latest BoM track below.

Cyclone Zelia's gone full throttle overnight and rapidly intensified into what looks like a strong category 4 (SSHS) storm - it's taking full advantage of very warm sea temps, lots of moisture and low wind shear. The forecast is still a tough call - will it nudge west and make landfall near Port Samson like some of the models are showing or start tracking towards Port Hedland? Right now the storm is stationary, if the westerly solutions are going to verify it should start trekking in that direction in the next few hours. So, as always, if you're in the warning zone make sure your cyclone prep is complete as soon as possible and get ready to hunker down.

Tropical Cyclone Zelia has formed off the coast of Western Australia and it looks like this one could get pretty strong before it makes landfall. Where and when that will happen is a tough call and I don't envy the forecasters with this one. Both the GFS and ECMWF models show a slow down and erratic movement just off the coast. The BoM bring it ashore with sustained winds of 85kts and central pressure of 952hPa. The slow movement will also exacerbate the flooding. If you're in the warning zone stay safe and get your cyclone prep wrapped up as soon as possible.

Significant M7.6 earthquake in the western Caribbean Sea, north of Honduras. On land shaking looks minimal however these is a tsunami threat with NWS stating "TSUNAMI WAVES REACHING 1 TO 3 METERS ABOVE THE TIDE LEVEL ARE POSSIBLE ALONG SOME COASTS OF CUBA."

In addition tsunami waves of 0.3m to 1m are possible along coasts of Honduras and the Cayman Island.

If you're near the coastline in these areas move inland to higher ground immediately!

Checking in on ole Vince way out in the southern Indian Ocean, must be lonely down there. That's a good thing because right now it's a strong cat 3 storm per JTWC and thankfully is expected to recurve before it gets close to Rodrigues Island or Mauritius. As I mentioned a few days ago, nice eye candy!

The southern Indian ocean is crawling with cyclones right now, dubbed 11S, 13S and 14S by JTWC. 11S is close to landfall on Madagascar as a low end tropical storm and after that likely to impact Mozambique in a few days as a tropical storm.

Neither 13S VINCE or 14S TALIAH will impact Australia, which is great news and look destined to be "fish" - storms that prowl the ocean but never reach land. Taliah in particular is expected to become quite strong with the Bureau of Meteorology (Aus) expecting it to reach a peak of 105kts (936hPa) in about 3 days from now. Should make for nice eye candy!

Areas of northern Queensland are under threat from extremely heavy rain and flooding this evening, into the weekend thanks to a slow moving tropical low tagged 13U. Development of this system into a tropical storm is unlikely, given it's pretty broad and straddling the coast. However the Bureau of Meteorology are warning that areas between Cairns and Bowen could see rainfall totals between 200-300m over the next 24 hours with isolated area seeing much higher than that. Risk of flooding is significant so stay safe all my Aussie mates in that region!

Most of Taiwan was rattled by a M5.6 earthquake this morning centered in Chiayi County with a maximum seismic intensity of 5+ (similar to Japan's Shindo scale.) Seismic intensity 4, which appears to have affected he larger cities on the SW coast like Tainan, whilst unpleasant is unlikely to have caused any widespread damage. Are you in Taiwan and did you feel this quake?
