In 17th-century Japan, during a fierce thunderstorm, a wealthy feudal lord took shelter under a large tree near a small, poor temple.

As lightning flashed, he noticed a cat sitting by the temple entrance, seemingly beckoning him closer with its raised paw. Curious, the lord stepped away from the tree toward the cat.

Moments later, lightning struck the exact spot he had been standing an instant that could have ended his life.

Grateful for the cat’s mysterious, life-saving gesture, the lord became the temple’s patron, providing it with wealth and protection. Over time, this story inspired the creation of the Maneki Neko, or “beckoning cat” figurines, which are still widely displayed in Japan today.

Often found in shops, restaurants, and homes, these cats with one paw raised are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity.

The tale is a blend of chance, symbolism, and gratitude, showing how a single moment can inspire centuries of tradition. What began as a quiet act by an ordinary temple cat evolved into one of Japan’s most recognizable cultural icons, continuing to “beckon” luck to anyone who passes by.
