These days, it’s pretty easy to get around with a data-only SIM card or eSIM, at least when travelling. In some cases, though, and perhaps especially here in Japan, there is a big argument for having a SIM or eSIM with a local phone number.

Maybe you’re looking at tickets for an upcoming concert in Japan, but the website needs a local phone number. Or perhaps you’re planning a move here and need to fill out a rental application. Let’s take a look at the common scenarios where having a phone number in Japan can make life a whole lot easier, and how to get one.

Tokyo can feel like a concrete jungle. But what if we told you there’s a serene green indoor space right in the middle of the city? Tucked away on an unassuming residential street between Ebisu and Daikanyama, mi:ne is more than a café — it’s a way of being.

Our menu item recommendation? Get the Matcha Basque Cheesecake.

One important thing to know about cherry blossoms is that there are several kinds. According to the official forecasts, cherry blossom season is quite short — from late March to early April. But that’s just the Somei-yoshino variety. Mid-April onwards is when the late-blooming cherry trees, or yaezakura, put on their show in Tokyo.

A sign that summer is coming sooner than later! 🎆

Today the official date for the big daddy of summer fireworks, Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival, has just been announced — July 25.

As the biggest fireworks festival in Tokyo, everything at the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is, well, bigger. The area around the Sumida River welcomes hundreds of thousands of yukata-clad visitors as well as a total of 20,000 fireworks.

Want to get planning? Download our Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival map on the Tokyo Cheapo website to see where you can view the fireworks for free.

Back in 2024, we visited the Kewpie Mayo Terrace, a free “museum” where you can learn how the famous mayo is made (and yes, taste it too). Since then, the adorable Kewpie mascot and that red-cap bottle have won over Tokyo travelers — with English tours booking out weeks ahead.

So, is it still worth it? We’ll let you decide.

Mayo it be your next Tokyo stop?

While the cherry blossom may be Japan’s most famous spring flower, it is by no means the only one. In fact, you might find that you prefer the drapey purple plumes of fuji-no-hana (wisteria), or the bold pink shibazakura (moss phlox) that covers whole fields around Mt. Fuji (and elsewhere).

Where there are flowers, there are festivals. Some of the Tokyo flower festivals, like those held at shrines, have long traditions. Others are more contemporary and may include flowers not always associated with Japan (like tulips). Many have evening illuminations — for you to start taking advantage of the warmer weather.

After closing in 2022, the Tokyo Edo Museum finally reopened on March 31, 2026 — and it’s had a major upgrade.

The redesign, led by architect Shohei Shigematsu, introduces a new entrance inspired by a traditional torii gate, along with more immersive exhibition spaces. Inside, large-scale screens now recreate the skies of Edo and modern Tokyo above the detailed models, and there’s even a new 26-meter-tall Hattori Clock Shop installation towering over the exhibits.

It’s also become much more visitor-friendly, with smartphone audio guides available in 13 languages and clearer visuals and explanations throughout the museum.

While the space has been modernized, it still keeps its iconic highlights — including the life-size Nihonbashi Bridge, a full-scale Kabuki theatre (which you can now actually walk through), and incredibly detailed historical dioramas.
